Hello - I do my modeling in Wings, and I have an issue I don't know how to handle. When creating something in Wings, if it has a smooth surface, it tends to have strange shadowy outlines on the face. (step1, in the attached diagram). I know this has something to do with the hardness or softness of the object face. So I highlight the offending areas, switch to my line tool and adjust the hardness to "Hard" (step 2 in the diagram) which gets rid of the shadowy forms, but leaves the model with visible ridges (result, in the diagram). My question is, how do I get rid of the shadows, without creating the ridges? Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks,
Steve

P.S. Ive noticed that the shadowy forms always appear around the edge of an object, or where I've "cut out" a section, as in a window or a door

Hi, I try hard edges in wings3d to use in poser as you say, and it gives problems, what I use to do is not to use hard edges at all, you can try add a loop edge near of the cut edge in wings3d.

Ok, but what is a loop edge?

Add a slight bevel to the edges and also, get rid of the ngons. There are quite a few I can see.

Yes,as Sam said, or if you cannot change the joint between "poser parts" because the mode is already cut
I am using an old wings3d version, perhaps now it is an easier way, but you can follow this easy steps.
Note that if you slide the edge and the model is already uv mapped, you have to make some little changes in the uv map too to correct it.

Oh, I see now your picture now, I cannot see it before, if you are talking about the "hole" , in that case, the Sam suggestion is the right and only one.
