Even if you're not a SW fan then its still a very interesting article on how the big boys do it

Did George Lucas save the local cinema?

Not to rain on anyone's warm fuzzies, but NO ...

... The company that did the VFX for the first STAR WARS movie (1977) was John Dykstra's company, ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), which was in Van Nuys, CA on Valjean next to the VN airport.

The company you know today was originally formed in San Rafael on Kerner Ave for EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and later appropriated the ILM name. That wasn't quite 40 years ago -- close but not quite.

I should know. I worked on some of the Optical FX Composites for the first STAR WARS at Ray Mercer & Co.

Hmm, having re-read the article there's a slight error in my headline writing 😅 Maybe 'SW at 40, ILM Close Behind' Even Wikipedia is a bit vague about the company start date.

I always forget that we're not just hobbyists here, there are seriously skilled people here

Oh, they're pushing the misconception because it just makes for good publicity. Not that it matters.

I didn't bother driving up to San Rafael for the party, though.
