I'm having problems with the Magnet Vertex Weights.
I tried practicing on Andy2.
Unfortunately nothing happens when I paint the mesh area I want to be subtracted from the magnets effect?
Am I missing a step somewhere?

As I suggested in another post ... share screen shots ... they always help pin down the issue.

I've attached a screen shot of the Andy 2 figure with the body part the magnet is loaded on (green mesh).
The magnet's zone is selected and its Vertex Weight panel is open.
The panel is set to subtract which should un-select anything the vertex weight's brush is run over.
Unfortunately the brush is having no effect.

Hello; I am pretty sure the manual says that the actual painting/repainting of weight and bulge maps is PoserPro only.
Poser "standard" (non-Pro) can use weight and bulge maps but you need PoserPro to create or adapt them.

Since the Vertex Weights panel is open on the screen shot I'm sure that this is PoserPro.
System used:
PoserPro11
Twin Xeon (16 cores total)
32 Gig ram
Win 10 64bit

The brush seems to be adjustable (Radius & Magnitude) unfortunately still no luck with subtracting or add options.
There was an update for PoserPro11 which I installed but still no change.

I found I had to adjust the magnitude value to 1 or higher for a quicker result. As standard it took me quite a few passes with the brush to get any subtraction, but it did work for me. I don't know if that helps any. I am using PoserPro11.1.0.34759.

Your right, I hadn't raised the magnitude that high.
Well spotted and thank you!

Glad it helped
