This is a real boat built in the mid 19th century. Those cones under the bow are its patent propellers.

Interesting. So it was essentially pulling itself through the water instead of pushing itself through.

Beadon patented this type of propeller (for a ship with a single cylindrical hull but with a different steerable propeller on the stern) in England in 1852. He steered the Ichthyon by varying the relative speeds of the two forward propellers. With one running full forward and one full reverse the boat could apparently turn within its length.
