I've had Poser 11 Pro for several years from Smith Micro. How do I go about updating the software. Do I need to pay again for it or can I get the new beta from Renderosity free. I need to have this answered since I am currently working on a project using it and Lightwave 3D and I have heard that the Smith Micrpo version will stop functioning in September.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

They will be issuing a patch that will keep Poser working. Look for it in September.

randym77 posted Mon, 26 August 2019 at 2:30 PM

Here's the article where they announced it.

https://www.renderosity.com/poser-update-an-interview-with-poser-s-content-manager-beta-team-lead-cms-21677

The SM license server is going away, so you have to update to keep Poser working.

The update is free, I'm sure.

an0malaus posted Mon, 26 August 2019 at 3:43 PM

@randym77 do you know whether the same situation applies to Poser Pro 2014/Game Dev? That's the license code that many will have used to upgrade to Poser 11. Any idea whether the old releases will need (and get) an update too?

I'd like to know this too. I upgraded from PP2014 and when I re-installed PP11 after my computer rebuild, I needed my old PP2014 key in order to activate PP11.

Maybe the update will make upgraded versions full licenses to make it easier. Though PP2014 was expensive so I do want my copy to work.

You make a good point. I still have my Poser 9 installed, but I didn't "upgrade" from P9 to PP11, so the need for the license key to get a new installation to work when I get a new laptop doesn't apply to me, but I'm interested in whether or not I'll have to move everything in that Library to PP11's Library. I prefer leaving them separate, but if need be, I suppose I could slowly reinstall everything into PP11. I just prefer keeping them separate for several reasons.

Hmmmm, I wonder if my PP11 would "recognize" my P9 Library even if the software no longer worked. I use the External Library option, so it maybe possible.

If you set it to add a library, see no Teresa why it shouldn't read your old library. One caveat, tho, your old favorite library might need to be rebuilt.

The only versions of Poser that need an activation server are Poser Pro 2014 Game Development and Poser 11 all versions. The reason you need your old key is you are using and upgrade instead of a new install. The 5th digit of your serial number will either be an U or R. U=Upgrade and R=Regular. So if you have Poser Pro 2014 NOT GD then you can install it on a computer that has no network ability and not have an issue.

AS far as the Smith Micro server going away I doubt that as SM has three version of MoHo 11, 12 &13 that all have the activation feature like Poser does and SM still sells and supports MoHo. In Fact they just released Version 13 at the beginning of July 19.

I'm still a little confused by what's being said. So...

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but, do I need to install the current version of the Download Manager that's on this site https://www.posersoftware.com/downloads? It's been a few years since I did any sort of update on my Poser Pro installation in any way, and that would include the download manager.

I assume that my current version of Poser Pro that I have installed is an upgrade from 2014 to Poser 11 Pro.

This how my license code/ serial looks XNB0CUD-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

Is this an upgrade or regular install?

Do I need to install the current Download Manager? The download manager version i have currently installed is 1.0.6.32930 - same number as what is on https://www.posersoftware.com/downloads

I'm really hoping that this update will go smoothly.

Comments welcome.

First, you can see what version of software you are using by going to Help>About Poser on the Main Menu.

If you have not purchased an upgrade to Poser 11 (at some point) you will not have Poser 11 even after the updates that are being tested for release next month. You will need a legal copy of Poser 11 Pro for this update to work (and be free). You can purchase an upgrade from PP2014 to PP2011 Here at Renderosity in order to qualify for the free Poser Pro 11 update coming next month.

I have not kept up with the process and policies for users who wish to continue using PP2014 and/or Game Dev. Perhaps someone else can help you with those questions.

In the meantime, except for updating to Poser Pro 11, I would recommend doing nothing until the release next month.

Richard60 posted Tue, 27 August 2019 at 9:54 PM

In the past when my download manager was out of date the first thing that would happen when I went to update Poser to the latest Service Release was that the new download manager would be downloaded first then I would have to open the new version so that it could get the updated Poser files.

And Yes you have an Upgrade based on that serial number as is it says CUD instead of CRD.

I did some checking, and I found my original order for Poser 11 Pro in my email archives from November 25, 2015. So now all I have to do is wait for the update notice. Hopefully they'll send me one! The project i'm doing is quite big and I have found FBX exports from Poser 11 pro to be better than exports I get from Daz 3D. I do use models from them too at times though.

I was just thinking I could save the time it would take to move all the content from my P9 Library to my PP11 Library, but if necessary, then I guess that's the route I'll have to take.

Are you Mac or Windows? In windows there is a file called "LibraryPrefs.xml" It is basically a listing of all the Poser Runtimes that tells Poser where to look for them. I just temporarily rename the xml extension as text and then edit the file in a text editor such as notepad, wordpad or word, saving it as text. For my earlier Poser stuff I just wrote in the file path were my Poser9 runtime was located and had no problem. I think I even have my Poser5 runtime intact and accessible in the library. I also make a special back-up of the LibraryPrefs.xml file as upgrades to Poser can wipe it out. I'm running PPro2014 Game Developer, but I'm told Poser 11 and Pro have this file as well. Someone (Baggins Bill, maybe?) correct me if I'm wrong.

I've pasted the info from the Smith Micro site immediately below following this post:

consumer573 posted Wed, 28 August 2019 at 3:05 PM

Also from the Smith Micro site. One of the things I want to keep is my Poser Libarary info with all its multiple pointers to external file links. The key file appears to be "Libraryprefs.xml" which can be edited as text if you change the extension. Before I reactivate Poser I'm going to find this file and make a backup. Here's what the Smih Micro Site says;

FROM SMITH MICRO: LIBRARY PREFS INFO

Solving weird issues by removing your Poser Preferences Poser 10, Poser Pro 2014/2014 Game Dev, and Poser 11/Poser Pro 11 If Poser crashes or starts behaving oddly for no apparent reason, it may be that its preference files have been damaged or corrupted.

Removing the damaged files will restore Poser to its factory default settings and may fix problems that won't go away otherwise. This won't remove any additional figures, props or poses that you might have installed.

To remove preferences you must shut down Poser first. You then can Move (Cut and Paste) the prefs files from their location in the folders (as described below) to a New Folder on your Desktop if you wish to back up these file, or you can delete the entire Poser preference folder altogether. If you wish to back up the specific files, then the specific files to back up are:

=> Poser Prefs (MAC) / Poser.ini (WIN)

=> LibraryPrefs.xml,

=> Poser UI Prefsxxxxx.xml

Poser will rebuild these files the next time you start the program (SO BACK THEM UP IF YOU WANT TO SAVE THEM; MAYBE MAKE PERIODIC BACK-UPS B4 A PROBLEM).

NOTE: If you use Multiple Runtimes, the **LibraryPref.xml **contains your External Runtime Links for your Libraries. You can Copy it back after testing to see if the issue is resolved. If the figure required to check is in an External Runtime, you will need to add that one Runtime back within the Poser application to see if the problem is resolved this way.

Poser 10 and Poser Pro 2014/2014 Game Dev as well as Poser 11/Poser Pro 11 place the Preference Files in the: following locations depending on Operating System

Mac OS

HD > Users > (username) > Library > Application Support > Poser (or Poser Pro) > 10 folder.

WINDOWS 7/8/10

ComputerLocal Disk >C:AppData>Roaming>Poser (or Poser Pro) The UI Preference will be in the English SubFolder.

For Windows if you do not see these folders....

By default, some of these folders are Hidden. To view these Folders, launch Control Panel and select Folder Options. Select the "View" Tab at the top and place the dot in the "Show hidden files and folders" option and click OK.

So I have a question. I have an offline install of Poser 11 Pro that I purchased through Renderosity a little while back.

When the new update is made available to non-beta users, will I be able to do an offline update somehow? I do have the serial number info and stuff in my Renderosity account here somewhere.

I did manage to an offline update a few months back using the 'offline code' feature that Smith Micro had via the system I use for the internet, but I haven't tried to update Poser more recently. I use Poser only occasionally, as I generally use Daz for most stuff at the moment.

Just wondering if I'll have options r.e. updating my Poser install that is offline. .

Yes, I know all about that file, and used it to not only include the path to my P9, but also to order the list as it, by default, includes the default Downloads folder Poser sets up during installation, which I have never used, so it's at the bottom of the list. 😉

I purchased PP11 from SM when it was released. So when this update comes out here does that mean that my version of PP11 will stop working and if so how to I rectify that? Hopefully it doesn't require purchasing a new copy.

Forgot to mention I have version 11.1.1.35540, and it's a regular install not an upgrade.

I am truly confused. But that is a norm these days for me. I just noticed that Bondware purchased Poser. Then I seen folks talking about Poser 11.2 update. Which leads to posersoftware.com. At the top it says "Downloads - Poser 11.2. But then it says "Install Poser 11.exe". Is this Poser 11.exe the Poser 11.2 update?

Do I need a Poser 11.1 update first? (I install Poser 11 years ago, but just never switched over to using it. So I haven't been keeping up with the news or updates) Do I need the Poser Support exe that is directly under the "Install Poser 11.exe"?

Sorry, I tried to search for these answers before asking. I even got lost in the forums, lol.

Thank you.

EClark1894 posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 10:15 AM

Poser 11.2 is an update for Poser Pro 2014 Game Dev, Poser 11, or Poser Pro 11. If you have any of those versions or an update for them issue by Smith Micro BEFORE Bondware bought Poser, then you need to update Poser for any of those versions to keep working as normal. It is a free update, you do not need to pay for it. You will need to download BOTH "Install Poser 11.exe" and "Poser Support". You should also download the content files that come with the update. You don't NEED to, but you get a LOT of free stuff you probably don't have yet. The Legacy Content is conent that you probably already have downloaded over the years IF you're a long-time Poser User. If you're relatively new to Poser, you probably will want to download that too. Hope that was helpful. Welcome to the forums. Don't be a stranger.

A quick caveat. There were TWO versions of Poser Pro 2014. One of them, does NOT need to upgrade. The second version, which came later was called Poser Pro 2014 GAME DEV. This version WILL NEED TO BE UPDATED or it will stop working. The update for this version is still free. Yes, any PRIOR version of Poser, INCLUDING the Poser Pro 2014 version will need to PAY $99 for the Upgrade.

hborre posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 10:16 AM

If you own Poser 11 then the version you have should be 11.1. The website Poser 11.exe is the 11.2 version and should be the latest stable build. Poser Support.exe is recommended for installation. To take advantage of the extra content, you will need your serial number from your install to gain access. There are other posts that also recommend backing up your preferences and perhaps your runtime in case something goes wrong. If you have set up Poser 11 in any particular way. I strongly suggest that during the installation process of the update to select use existing preferences to retain those settings. Also, copy your SN to a text file just in case it disappears during installation.

EClark1894 posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 10:25 AM

I suggest keeping your Serial Number written down somewhere where you can easily get ahold of it. Also, a word of advice that I had to learn the hard way. Poser DOES NOT USE the LETTER O in it's serial numbers. It is always a zero. It took me ten years to finally figure that out.

hankstr posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 8:33 PM

I'm also in the ditch. I've had Poser Pro 2014 for many years and it worked great until Oct 5th, 2019 when it would no longer start due to the license key - what the hell? I saw that I needed to download Poser 11 which I did (using my Poser Pro 2014 serial number) and was back in business until today. Now Poser 11 won't come up, wanting me to purchase it? It states that my Poser Pro 2014 serial number is invalid. It is not invalid, I still have the original purchase notes from Smith Micro. Am I forced to purchase the new release? How do I remedy the problem?

EClark1894 posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 8:46 PM

You were not supposed to update to Poser 11. As I said before, you have the first version of Poser Pro 2014, not the Game Dev version. ONLY the Game Dev version of Poser Pro 2014 needed to update. It sounds like you downloaded the update and got a 21 day free trial version of Poser Pro 11.2. Now that trial has come to an end and you need to upgrade to Poser Pro 11 for $99. That's why your serial number is invalid. When your PP2014 quit working in October, why didn't you contact Smith Micro, who owned Poser at that time to help you?

hankstr posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 9:33 PM

When my Poser Pro 2014 quit working this past Saturday (I had no idea who owned it at the time, I assumed Smith Micro), I clicked on the contact support button. There was an option to send an email to support so I did. I noticed that support was Renderosity and since I have an account here I started looking at the forums after firing off the note. Right away I saw a forum thread: Has your Poser stopped working? License Issues? Can't start Poser?
It was created on October 5th and says there is a required update to Poser 11.2 fpr Poser 2014 users. I don't know what gamedev but I do have Poser Pro 2014 and the forum thread looked like a dead ringer for my problem.

hankstr posted Wed, 09 October 2019 at 9:37 PM

Interesting also that if Poser 11.2 had a 21 day trial and I downloaded it only on Saturday that seems far short of 21 days.

EClark1894 posted Thu, 10 October 2019 at 4:08 AM

My apologies, to you, hankstr. I misread the date you wrote. For some reason, I thought you were saying your Poser quit Oct. 5th of last year which is why I was wondering why it took you so long. Although if you don't have Poser Pro 2014 and not the Game Dev version I'm at a loss to understand why your Poser quit working. I have 2014 and it started right on up this morning with no issue.

hankstr posted Thu, 10 October 2019 at 7:13 AM

Thanks for the response and no worries about the misread. This is the response I got from the ticket I opened to support:

"The Key you indicated is Poser Pro 2014, not Poser Pro 2014 Game Dev or Poser 11. If you do not have Poser Pro 2014 Game Dev or Poser 11, you will need to purchase Poser 11, the new 11.2"

I really did not want to change or purchase anything, just to continue using the software I bought.

I can't speak for Bondware but experience with upgrades for software that I own is that it matters how close to the release announcement your upgrade was paid for. If you upgrade now you'd probably have to pay twice. Also, you don't know when it will be released. Could be in September...
