So, despite my hopes that I'd be able to purchase Poser by the end of my trial, it hasn't panned out that way, and I'm still not sure when I'll be able to. Waiting on a check that people are taking their sweet time sending to me.. Funny how it always works out that way.
Anyway!
While I wait, I was wondering if there are any "must have" or at least "highly recommended" tools or content packs you would recommend for someone just starting out with Poser, to give them a boost?
Maybe some good paid training courses? I'm open to that, too.
I understand Poser 11 Pro comes with a lot of stuff, and that I can pick up La Femme Pro to get full use of her..
But what else is good to have in the toolbox besides that?
I'll have some extra $$ left beyond the $200 for Poser itself, so I'd like to put together a shopping list :)
Thanks in advance!

I'd get used to the content that comes with Poser before I bought anything else. That way you'd see what you have, and be able to figure out what you need easier.

For training I'd start with the latest videos from renderosity on you tube.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHskz2PNix3Alw_gLu1_ezbQGg7kqUFVZ
Once you get started with the free content then you will probably get to the stage of deciding you need a specific item to complete a scene the way you want, then people here will be able to come up with specific suggestions.
Do you have a favourite genre or know what type of renders you are hoping to create, portraits, outdoors scenes, crowded indoor scenes? Poser is so versatile it's difficult to give general ideas

That's a good point, regarding what genres, etc.
Generally I'm into Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Horror. Mostly Fantasy at this point, for a story I'm intending to tell using Poser. I'm also interested in (eventually) creating my own props and such in Blender to use.. maybe sell them on the market, but that's getting ahead of myself heh.
Some animals would be good to have. I'll have to look through the marketplace a bit.
Thanks!

That's some solid advice for sure.
I find there's usually at least a couple tools or addons that come highly recommended with a program, so thought I'd ask what those were for Poser.
Thanks :)

Piggy-backing off my own question, in the Marketplace, when I'm looking for models/assets.. Items indicated as for Poser 10 / 2014, or 9, etc... are those also compatible with Poser 11? Would they work "as-is", or has there been any format changes that would require some finegling, etc? Just want to make sure I don't buy stuff I can't actually use.
Thanks
EClark1894 posted Tue, 03 March 2020 at 7:42 PM
Actually, Poser comes with several animal figures and poses in Legacy Content. It also includes the relatively new Hivewire Horse and Gorilla.
My other suggestion to you is to make sure you look into the scripts that come with Poser. I've had Poser for over 20 years, so I've gotten rather set in my ways. Still, many of the scripts that come included are extremely useful. Be sure to look under the Scripts Menu.

Yeah I've seen discussion and mention of scripts in Poser. I'll have to give them a gander... once I can actually buy it. -sigh- lol.
Oh, one other thing I'm wondering but couldn't find an answer to.... Does something like DAZ Dragon 3 work in Poser? I haven't seen anything similar specifically made for Poser, and I'd like to have a dragon available for some work.
Thanks!

Found the thread - started in May 2016 and last message by Chris in May 2019 that he just doesn't have the ressources to follow it up ...
Pity. I would be all in for a dragon that works natively in Poser AND DazStudio, just like the other HW figures ...
TwoCatsYelling posted Wed, 04 March 2020 at 7:36 PM

So that DSON importer handles all the morphs, too, then? That figure has a great number of options available. Would be great to have them available in Poser, too. Cool render, by the way. What's she reading?
Also, that's a great resource for the freebies. I'm going to have to keep a bookmarks folder for all the resources I've been linked to here.

Yes, DSON handles the morphs. For the textures you will have to remember to load the Poser mc6 materials (which are included in the Dragon 3 files).
What is she reading? Hmmm ... a fairytale book about ... humans? Maybe. LOL

I'd suggest:
the free DSON Importer for Poser and its extender (I forget what that's called now), for loading older DAZ Genesis figures and props into Poser.
the latest Scene Toy Pro (paid), for easier and quicker scene work.
PzDB 1.2 (paid, cheaper than 1.3) for finding and loading stuff as your library expands. Not vital at first, but you may soon find you need it. Although you might wait for Poser 12 and see what changes there are there, and if there's a better Library for handling large runtimes. I'm not sure there will be, but the Library does get a bit better with each release. I tend to use it for Lights and PzDB for everything else.
For custom 'monster fantasy' that's unique to you, you might want the various packs for M3/M4/V4 + morphs that go under names like Creature Creator and similar.
If your story is aimed at a comics format, then Comic Life is a solid layout and lettering software, very much easier to learn and cheaper than Clip Studio.
Learn the Secrets of Poser 11 and Line-art Filters.

Hey those are some very cool suggestions.
I really like the looks of Scene Toy Pro. So I'll definitely look into that. I've seen the DSON Importer mentioned a number of times, so that's obviously a no-brainer. For the library/runtime management addon, I think I want to learn the ins-and-outs of how Poser handles runtimes inherently first. I think that'll help me better understand the benefits of using an addon for it. Though, like you said, waiting for version 12 could also be a good idea.
I've been looking through a lot of the packs just for V4 and have been really impressed. Some of them look as good as G8 figures I've seen and used, maybe better in some cases. I've looked at some in the store, and assumed it was for a later Genesis figure, or maybe LaFemme, and was surprised to see V4.2. Not sure how folks pulled that off with such an older figure, but the results speak for themselves. Some skilled folks working with it. I've been bookmarking some V4 stuff for later purchase.
I learned about Comic Life from checking out BlackSun Comics and following some of his content. It looks like a really cool program. Will have to look into that more.
Thanks!

It's been awhile since I've even loaded V4, let alone the files, but at first glance, and hoping someone will corect me if I'm wrong: You need :
V4.2 Base
V4.2 Skin Maps (std res)Standard Resolution
V4.2 Wet Maps
V4.2 Skin Maps (High Resolution)
V4.2 Shapes++
V4.2 Shapes++ Developers Kit
I _BELIEVE (and I could be wrong) _that all the other files are used by Studio.

Thank you for helping me out!
In fact (as I experienced it) you only need the V4.2 base and the V4.2 Morphs++ (which now seem to be renamed to "Shapes++" for no obvious reason). Everything else is optional only, but not needed for the figure to work.
Once you have Sasha-16 installed, look for the other options that are supported by the figure. It comes with a couple of premade installers which you can run straight from the setup folders,. From what I've experienced, any other injections made for V4 can also be applied.
Remember, it's just V4 again, but with a big lot of improvements.
