Subject: PLEASE make the hierarchy window remember it's last collapsed state!

This is an issue that has been moaned about and discussed in the Poser community for countless years already, but has been stubbornly ignored by the "powers-that-be":

So if you want to work with the Hierachy Window it needs endless scrolling in the metres-long list:

--> Because each figure and the props and clothing parented to it

--> PLUS all props (e.g. a room with a hundred furniture items!)

ALL LOAD -->EXPANDED<-- , DOWN TO THE LAST RIVET PROP!!!

Please DEVs:

Note that there are some people who have more that just a single "ANDY" in the scene, but also a lot of additional props, clothing, and what more!! !

PLEASE!

Make the scene files (pz3) and character(cr2) files REMEMBER the last status of collapsed/uncollapsed items!!!

You have this already in the "groups" for the dials ("collapsed 1")

What's SOOO difficult in just saving the "collapsed" status for each actor in the hierarchy too?

All you need to do is to add another line to any Poser file:

"collapseHierarchy 1",

and change the Poser code to automatically process this, instead of the individual clicks in the hierarchy window.

Addendum because I can't edit my last post any longer:

"All you need to do is to add another line to any Poser file:"

"collapseHierarchy 1",

.

** Add "figure/prop/grouping" to that!.**

Maybe Poser 12.

Or in "Poser2525"? 😇

I have to agree with Karina, as I've been moaning about this for a long time, and NOT just for reopened scene files, but ALSO from the get-go.

If it's not possible from the get-go, then all that's needed is a link/icon we can click that will collapse everything in a brand new scene so we can expand and work on the ONLY portion we want expanded in a scene.

I wind up wasting a lot of time collapsing everything to a workable list, and no I don't mean collapse at the Body actor level, but to different sections, such as Left/Right Collar, Left/Right Thigh, and especially the Head with newer characters, such as La Femme and L'Homme.

I've been complaining about this almost every day for 20 years and it still isn't fixed. Good luck.

I don't disagree with anything that's been said, but can't someone simply write a Python script to close the hierarchies in a scene? That sounds like a very profitable idea for a script.

Richard60 posted Thu, 09 April 2020 at 4:50 PM

It would be a great script IF Poser Python had functions for the Hierarchy editor but it doesn't along with no functions for Animation Layers and who knows how many other things that could be scripted if exposed to Python.

I think netherwork's scenetoy scripts do all that, haven't had a chance to play with it all that much. It's a replacement for the hierarchy, amongst other things.

In a related issue. We need a "refresh" choice when we update our materials so that every blasted mat file we've used in a scene we are working in doesn't keep building up even though we have removed material maps from our props or figures.

The only thing about asking for small fixes like these is that it apparently takes so long that none of the devs ever have time to do anything else. Maybe they should hire a couple of extra devs to do nothing but fix these little issues.

This request seems more a “quality of life” feature than a functionality issue. It’s why some programs are efficient and even pleasurable when trying to get work done and some make you grit your teeth as you work. Unfortunately new functions are easier to market and it takes forward thinking developers to get it done.

It’s not just the hierarchy window either, I have the same problem in the cloth room when selecting what objects the cloth should drape over. There are numerous inefficiencies in Poser that addon makers have addressed but they should be in the core program.

Sorry but I must DISagree with this part!

The "quality of life" does matter a lot to me because this is a mere hobby and I don't want to have to get a degree in computer science before I can use a program for fun. That's one of the things that still make me stick with Poser:

If I had wanted all that, I would have migrated to Dza or Blender years ago already, when the going was tough with Poser...

Glad I didn't!

I just fire up Poser, create a prop, make some texturing, load a scene, add a figure, pose, and render it. And guess what? All this I do within Poser, without ever needing any other program than (occasionally) UVmapper!

At the end of the day I have a render which I can enjoy.

And that's what this is all about!

I reiterate, because whenever you post something like this, someone will tell you about how small the Poser dev team is and how they're super busy dealing with the core program.

Then they should concentrate on exposing everything to the Python API and we will do the work
