OK - Yes I know... Poser 5 is ANCIENT but I don't use it enough to warrant updating everything. However, I recently bought a 'Pose' set intended for P6 and up. I can't seem to be able to use it in P5 The name of the set appears in my Pose list but it won't open. Is it impossible???

EClark1894 posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 9:41 AM

Unfortunately, I didn't buy Poser 5. But for the most part Poser is very backward compatible, so unless your prop or figure is rigged differently in some significant way, it may be possible for use in older versions of Poser.

Royfitz posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 9:48 AM

I installed it usual, but the folder doesn't want to open in my 'pose' library. Checking the content, it seems to be there. I'm baffled...

randym77 posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 10:25 AM

IIRC, the major change in Poser 6 that might affect pose files is external morphs were added. PMD files.

That shouldn't matter with ordinary pose files, that just position figures. But if they're pose files that apply morphs, there could be issues.

Royfitz posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 11:11 AM

All of my other 'pose' sets contain a PZ2 file, and an RSR file. This new set contains the PZ2 files, but the others are PNG. Would this make the difference as to why the new pose folder won't even open? If not, then I'm REALLY baffled.

I think Poser 5 should be able to read PNG thumbnails.

Can you provide a link to the product you're having trouble with? If it wasn't bought here, just tell us what it was and where you bought it. (They don't allow direct links to other stores.)

Also, provide info on which figure the pose was intended for and which figure you were applying the pose. There could be a feature introduced into P6 that does not translate to P5. Unfortunately, I don't have a list of comparative features between the 2 versions to determine what changes can affect the Pose files, or poses, in general.

Hello there. Here's the recent purchase. It's not intended for any particular figures. Very often, newer stuff just flags up a message ' Never version than expected - will try to run'.... And it almost always works. I can't even seem to install this set properly even though I've tried umpteen variations.

Are you sure you downloaded and installed the correct files? That looks like it's a package for both V4 and Genesis. Usually there's more than one zip file, and you don't need to download and install the DAZ Studio files if you're only using Poser, and vice-versa.

I'm suspecting that part of the problem is that P5 may not recognize the .png format that Poser switched to for the thumbnails and hangs up when trying to read them to open the file... previous versions to P6 used .rsr extensions for thumbnails. Try converting with

rsr to png converter

I don't know if it converts backwards ... but it's worth a try.

According to specs, it requires Victoria 4 or Genesis 2. Which figure are you attempting to apply to?

randym77 posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 2:04 PM

I think Poser started using PNG files with Poser Pro. Poser 5 should be fine with them.

EClark1894 posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 3:26 PM

Poser 4 was the last version of Poser that I can recall ran on my Classic Mac OS. That was still using RSRs. I think I finally used Soft Rabbit's Mac Converter to convert them all to PNGs. Come to think of it, I did have some library items that didn't show or open until I did convert them to PNGs. And yes, tthat was Poser 6 that I had to convert them for.

Try converting the RSR to a PNG to see if it shows up in your library and you can launch it.

BTW, if you're going backward and want to use the poses in P5, you may have to convert them BACK to RSR.

randym77 posted Mon, 29 June 2020 at 3:52 PM

I think Poser 4 was the last version that needed RSRs.

I still have a few products with RSR thumbnails. Haven't bothered to convert them; they still work, you just can't see the thumbs.

Could open one of the files in a text editor and change the version number at the file heading. See if that works. Many files you open as text show version 6 as the version, it's a sort of standard practice for compatibility.

...guess it wouldn't matter if the files/folders are invisible though.

I've checked all my current working content, and the little images are RSR. PNG shows a little grey shrugging man. Is there a PNG to RSR converter anywhere? I downloaded P3d0 evaluation copy, but the 'cinert' buttons are greyed out. I don't really want to but it unless I have to, just to convert a bunch of PNG's.

randym77 posted Tue, 30 June 2020 at 12:16 PM

That's weird. I could swear Poser Pro Pack and Poser 5 used PNG thumbnails.

If that is the problem, I think P3Do Explorer is the easiest solution. There were a lot of converters going the other way, but not a lot of people want to go from PNG to RSR.

You could make thumbnails within Poser. Apply the pose, render it, then re-save the pose. It should create a thumbnail that your version of Poser can read.

Or maybe someone who has P3Do can do the conversions for you. I would think sharing just the .RSR files would be okay, since you can't use them to do anything on their own.

Once again, thanks to everyone, but...

PROBLEM SOLVED....!!!

It seems there's a limit on how much you can add to your Pose library in P5. I just shifted a few rarely used pose sets into a 'spares' folder and hey-ho - my new set works fine! I also found an old copy of P3d0 on my ancient XP laptop. According to the read-me, it only works on XP. I installed it on my PC (Windows 7) and it works great. All my awkward PNG 'grey guy' thumbs are now RSR and show properly...

Happy days.

randym77 posted Tue, 30 June 2020 at 2:41 PM

You know, I did wonder if that was issue, but forgot to mention it. Older versions of Poser did have limits on the number of files you could have in each folder. One reason I have a million runtimes now. My habits were set in the old days. (And I'm a packrat.)

Royfitz posted Tue, 30 June 2020 at 3:12 PM

I must admit I'm confused by multiple Runtimes... How does Poser know where to look???

You tell it. You can add as many runtimes as you want, and navigate them in the library pane the same way you would navigate any other folders.

The easiest way to make a new runtime is to just start unzipping products to a new location. It will create the necessary file structure. Then you can attach it from inside Poser. (I think you can do this with Poser 5, if you want to try it.)

My runtimes are all on an external drive, in a folder called !runtimes. I have different runtimes for different figures, and different themes. Vicky 3, Vicky 4, Mike 4, La Femme, Animals, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Contemporary, Horror, Sports, Toon, Hair, Holiday, Lights and Materials, etc. I only attach the ones I'm using, so I don't have to scroll through too many while I'm working.
