Subject: Poser and Bryce

Probablly someone asked that before... but when I export from poser and import it to bryce, the objects are all grey with no colors or textures. I am probablly doing somethong wrong. I just don't know hot to add to the poser object its colors when I export it. Please help me! :-)

Go here for a tut on how to do this. It never worked for me, but then again......I just didn't have the patience to wait for it to Work! I do like "Bryce" but the rendering time has a lot to be desired, and I suppose in my old age, I don't like to wait anymore! (: Take care and I hope this helps. genny

There are several good tutorials on the subject. There is also a utility (PC only, i think) called Grouper, which processes the OBJ files after Poser export and before Bryce import, giving recognizable names to the texture groups and getting you a huge part of the way there. i got the URL for Grouper somewhere on Renderosity. The main thing is that Bryce 4.0 (at least) needs to you add the textures through the Texture Editor or at least adjust them through the texture editor. i think but i'm not positive that this is by way of the mysterious .mtl file that poser exports along with the .obj file. Somehow, Bryce always asks me where the texture files are for every bit of imported mesh. Tedious, but still quicker than assigning by hand. Then you usually have to go in and adjust transparencies as well as adjusting diffusion and ambience. i got a perfectly wonderful tutorial--better than Peter Sharpes, if you can believe it--that explains it all. Had it from a Bryce site, but that info is at home just now. :^( i'd have to look it up for you later, if you want. Best of luck. Rendering in Bryce is generally my preference, despite the texturing hassles, because it actually lights the figures so much better, and you can have so much more control. Nan

Oh Nan, PLEASE do look it up and post.....because I would also like to see it. I will read it over, and maybe....when I learn to be more patient...or find and have a reason to wait, It will come in handy. (: I am always open to learn something new, and when and if the time comes.....all these tuts, sugestions, etc.......do stick in my mind....(I am not that old that I don't remember.) and I always like to keep them in my "Favorites" file of my browser. genny

Someone - I forget whom - once posted this simple, yet elegant solution. While still in Poser, make a note of all the textures used. Open Bryce, create a few spheres, and give'em the textures you noted in Poser - that way Bryce will "get to know" the textures in advance. Then import the Poser figures. Should give you no trouble at all - unless you've omitted a tex.

Thank you, Thip. There's always more than one way to solve this problem. This sounds like a great idea for someone who might be doing comics or other storytelling where textures will get used more than once, as the material editor will remember the paths--for a session! Wouldn't one have to save the materials in the user library to keep them between sessions? Folks, i printed out the instructions a while back, so the URLs on there somewhere! i will definitely try for it tonight.

To avoid the whole mess of having to figure out where the textures are, greyscale the .bum maps, invert the trans maps etc check the link. If you are using the same character with the same textures over and over, save a picture list. You can do that in the picture thingy inside the material editor. Warning - those things get really massive really fast. Especially if you are using big tifs like I do. BTW if your tif has an alpha channel Bryce will bring it in automatically. BUT if your tif has two or mroe alpha channels it gives you a weird error message and won't bring it in at all. Lyrra

Sorry if this is already mentioned in the tutorials above - (i'm at work and don't have time to go through them) :)) If you put the textures in the same folder as the obj you are importing, Bryce4 should just apply them automatically... Hope this helps Dal

Dan Wilmes has developed a utility (see his post in this thread), that saves all the compication that you get when importing into Bryce (or any app that reads .MTL files) an object and associated .MTL file. I have used it to import a 5 character Poser scene (Posette, clothes, Dork, Eagle, Rhino) within one object, including all textures and it only took 2 minutes from export from Poser to import into my 3D app...no extra texture adjustment was needed...it even converts the bump file to a bitmap for you.
