Poser 12 F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 11:16 am)
Welcome to the Poser Forums! Need help with these versions, advice on upgrading? Etc...you've arrived at the right place!
Looking for Poser Tutorials? Find those HERE
These are the selling points that sold me on Poser 12:
• New Optix support, Nvidia RTX and Turing graphics cards.
The updates to SuperFly include support for Optix hardware based
raytracing. This can yield significant performance gains in render
speed.
• New SuperFly Adaptive Sampling improves render speed.
Another part of the improved SuperFly implementation of Cycles is
Adaptive Sampling. This feature automatically adjust the render sampling
based on image noise. This allows the render to automatically focus on
noisy areas that need more rendering samples.
• New Intel OIDN, is a AI based noise reductions system
This new addition to SuperFly uses machine learning to detect and remove
noise from SuperFly renders. When combined with adaptive sampling you
can realize significant increases in speed and render quality.
First off... Optix rendering doesn't seem to work AT ALL... Second... rendering with RTX 3060 graphics card takes a minimum of 20% LONGER than rendering with my Ryzen9 5950X CPU. Lets just say I'm not a happy camper. I have poser 11 pro and I was happy with it for the most part it just wouldnt work with my RTX card for rendering, I opted to pay full price for Poser 12 so I could continue to use Poser 11 without upgrading. $250 bucks thrown out the window.
Y'all have a great day.
Hi
Just to let you know: Poser, when its RTX mode is activated, loads the first time the (library? engine? whatever?), and it lasts something like a full minute or more on my system, then the following times its faster, all the time, often 2x as fast as the GTX mode.
Then, from time to time, it crashes, I have a ticket at the support for this.and it's not always at the very start of the render: it happened from time to time during the render.
It looks like there's a nasty bug deep inside the Cycles-RTX part. I know that from time to time, I must revert a hair's cap back to posersurface to let it work without crashing. And I know that some objects (props, clothes) have problems in their geometries that makes the RTX-Cycles couple crash, too.
I'm saying this because it's based on my own, humble experience.
But the hope is there: Bondware has enrolled a real Cycles expert. I don't remember his name, but I know that he long worked for Poser, he knows it very well...
... and he's back 😁

You should ask your Money back , either to the upgrade Price or the a full charge then buy again the upgrade version if you still wish having it ! And sure not hesitating to long. These are the selling points that sold me on Poser 12:

Best would be to wait for Poser 12 for the final release as it is still after all this time a Prerelease. It still has many Bugs

I was not aware P12 was in pre-release that explains a lot.... I've been Posering since P2, I'm not going to force a refund...I'll bitch, whine, piss/moan and bellyache for a while. I'm a grumpy old man, I tend to do what grumpy old men do best....LOL... Y'all have a great day.

Did you to ask to the support?

I doubt there is any post release software that does not a have at least a few bugs so the questions has to be what are the bugs and how serious are they. How serious they are in many cases is dependant as to whether a user will experience that bug in day to day use. I use Poser 12 on a daily basis and have done so for years including all the time Rendo has been developing it and I have not experience a bug. I have updated at every update as there have been many changes that make Poser 12 easier to use. I also use some of the new Poser scripts and some need a certain version or above for them to work (The Scatter Tool II Python Script for Poser 12 - 12.0.396 or newer).
I could have waited for the Final Release but I would have missed a whole bundle of fun while I waited.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
Okay, am reading this and...did anyone addressed the issue of *why* OP's renders are grey? Is the feature not working? Was YPhil's suggestion tried? Was a support ticked filed? Did we verify it was not a camera issue?
I just really don't want anyone to read this and think it was another session of sidetracking--we do that sometimes. Guilty as charged.

That is a fair point sadly, I am behind the game line in the hardware stakes and therefore I cannot try and duplicate the problem or provide any real help. I would be interested in an answer to the questions you raise though.Okay, am reading this and...did anyone addressed the issue of *why* OP's renders are grey? Is the feature not working? No I've found no solution to the problem, Optix renders still gray. Y-Phil's post, while appreciated, wasn't germane to my issue, I have no problem with RTX renders, only Optix... Optix renders work great in Blender so I'm sure it isn't a hardware issue on my side. I haven't filed a ticket, I had bad experiences in the past with support (Smith Micro) resulting in such frustration i quit poser for a while, I was having issues with poser crashing on file save resulting in corrupt scenes when I reopened, with a loss of days , weeks even months of meticulous animation(auto-save wasn't implemented until a later release)... I've since developed the habit of saving to new files other than saving over old. The problem seems to have been resolved in the interim, but still... I prefer being a squeaky wheel in the forums other than having some propeller head piss on my leg and tell me its raining...LOL

a grey render is your RTX card crashing on a bad material node or shader in your scene. Once you have that crash you have to restart Poser or it wont render anything at all with OPTIX checked. First thing to check after restarting Poser is turn off OPTIX and see if it renders. If you get a render then you have to figure out what figure or object is causing the crash. Turn off everything in your scene except one thing and see if you get a render or a crash. If a crash then look at the shader setup for that item. One thing OPTIX does not like is ambient occlusion nodes. Super Fly DOES NOT NEED TO FAKE AMBIENT OCCLUSION WITH A SHADER NODE. I have also found that my free Super Shader for P11 sometimes crashes OPTIX.

OK.... heres a render with RTX.... just rhe default construct with a couple of seachnasaigh's textures, checked all lights...No AO.
Heres the same Scene , Optix render... Gray in viewport Black when saved... I re-render with RTX without rebooting with no problem...I think its the renderer crashing not the RTX card.

Optix is working on your rig?...What Gpu are you using?
Y'all have a great day.
Great News.... Optix now working.... Turns out when I did a clean install of Windoze11 it automatically installed G force game drivers for my GPU, I uninstalled those and installed the Studio drivers I normally run... Now getting 2.5 frames per min with medium adaptive GPU preset as opposed to a tad over one frame per min before. Still not applying noise reduction even though its ticked, I do batch drag&drop NVIDIA de-noising manually(wish there were options for de-noising strength though). Oh well, it is what it is. Still not 40x but its all this RTX3060 is capable of I guess. It'll have do till I can get a 3090 or a 3090ti if or when the bottom ever drops out of the GPU market.
Here's a sample render, big scene with a whole Neighborhood of actual geometry one streetlight outside. HDRI on the construct, and a movie (War Of The Worlds night battle scene) driving an area light hidden inside the TV (TV set to not cast shadows)... Y'all have a Great day.
Render
De-noised
These are draft renders I'll tweak animation and materials several times before final renders with higher samples....
Y'all have a great day.
Glad you managed to sort the problem.

There were issues early on with the default post render effects setting not working. I suggest unchecking and rechecking that option box and see if it starts working for you. Maybe also the same for the Intel denoise option. I use it all the time now. The intel denoise doesn't run on the GPU so the GPU should not be an issue here.

That did the trick... Thank you very much.

OK so I'm an idiot.... Somebody clue me in as to why the renders are gray if I use the Optics render option. P12 is up to date, just purchased yesterday. RTX 3060 12gb. R9 5950X.
