Hi
My question is probably very simple but I can't find the answer.
When I create a prop:
- I import my .obj file
- In the library window I click on the +.
- I give a name and select what I want to save
But the mesh is included in the .pp2 as "geomcustom".
How do I generate an .obj and have it referenced in the .pp2 with ResFile?
Thanks for your help

As far as I know, you will need to strip the geometry from the .pp2 file. There are small utility programs for this. Vanishing Point had Geometry Stripper. EvilInnocence (makers of the CrossDresser clothes-fitting program have Object Extractor. Dimension 3D had EmbGeom.
It is possible to manually edit the .pp2 file, but it's easier/faster to use one of those geometry-stripping utilities.

Geometry Stripper looks very good and is available on renderosity. But when I click on Download, I'm redirected to an external sales site, where the software doesn't exist!
The others can't be found on google

Is this what you want? Says it's only for Daz.

Or this?

Evilinnocence is only for Poser, not for Daz according to the description.
"This utility allows you to extract the object from a Poser prop which has embedded geometry. Simply choose the original prop, and then choose the locations for the extracted object, and the new prop file without embedded geometry."
And it seems to fit my problem

Yeah, but it says this on the page, like it's to be used in DS, not Poser, but it uses Poser props. I dunno.

Vanishing Point's 'Geometry Stripper' down-load page is not archived by WayBack Machine.
Also, GS may be free, but its 'terms & conditions' prohibit unauthorised redistribution...
There's a ($$) PhilC PZ3 editor which, in passing, can strip selected embedded OBJs...
Ha ! Remembered this tutorial for DIY PP2 hacking....
http://www.cocs.com/poser/props2.htm
Sorta 'Rule of Thumb;: If PP2 / OBJ / MTL less than ~100 kb, Notepad should be okay. Above 100 kb, Wordpad or similar is better, will note 'choke' on file size.
Sorry, must go: Given myself a kaleidoscopic visual migraine. Like looking through poly-prismatic goggles...

Ha... I had never seen that an obj is a simple text file. I could write a python script one day, just as an exercise

Dimension 3d"s "Poser File Editor" also has a geometry stripper tool, which strips out the geometry, creates the OBJ file in the same folder, and creates a link to it in the PP2 file.
davo posted Tue, 26 April 2022 at 10:13 PM
Here is a manual hack, save the prop to a library of choice, but also save the geometry in a runtime folder of your choice.
You can cut and paste this text, just change the "your folder name:your obj" to the correct info (be sure to get the brackets!):
{
storageOffset 0 0.3487 0
objFileGeom 0 0 :Runtime:Geometries:your folder name:your objfile.obj
}
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Davo

Wow, I've had, and used, the PFE for years, and never knew that was one of the Tools. Kewl! :grin:Dimension 3d"s "Poser File Editor" also has a geometry stripper tool, which strips out the geometry, creates the OBJ file in the same folder, and creates a link to it in the PP2 file.

Another tip, if you do it the manual way, using Notepad++, choose "Languages/JSON" for highlight syntax, this will make it possible to collapse the contents inside brackets. Note: this does not mean the pp2 follows JSON file standards, it is just a workaround I've found.

I mean like really, is all this jumping through hoops necessary at all? I've been saving props to library for 25+ years never had a single problem.... Add prop to library_click on preview image to reload... It always works....Am i doing it wrong or are the propeller heads Rube Goldberging something simple?...LOL
Y'all have a great day.
adp001 posted Thu, 28 April 2022 at 4:11 PM
If you want to modify or extend a prop, you need a format that is compatible with one of the common modelers (e.g. Blender, Z-Brush, or similar). Poser files are usually not. This is the reason why either know how for the manual process or a script for exporting is needed.

The reason someone might want to externalize the geometry is because if it's large mesh and has a large file size, having multiple instances of it in your scene might bog down the scene. Externalizing the geometry will save you some resources.I mean like really, is all this jumping through hoops necessary at all? @davo
Thanks for the clarification.
The reason I came forward to address this is to encourage new users to go ahead and take the 'easy route' when saving props... After all, you don't have to fully understand the fundamentals of electricity to be able to operate an electric tool/appliance. Creativity isn't dependent on understanding what goes on behind the scenes, you can leave that to someone more qualified, if you want... You can do this, don't get discouraged by what you don't understand...
Y'all have a great day.
