It doesn't seem me that there is a version of upgrade from Vue 3. Does someone have surer news?

jarm posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 3:24 AM

Yes I asked E-ON who confirmed in e-mail that there would be an upgrade version of Vue 4 for Vue 3 owners, not other details were given though. Jody

MikeJ posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 3:40 AM

Jody, I guess you're saying that they didn't give you a price quote?

jarm posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 8:05 AM

Indeed Mike. Anybody know when Vue 4 is being released?

Varian posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 10:39 AM

All we know for sure is that v4 is due soon. "Soon" could be anytime between now and September. The Mac version is due sometime around September, but the PC version will likely be out prior to that. We haven't heard an absolute on whether there will be an upgrade from 3->4, but I'd expect one simply from how e-on has handled version changes previously. Meanwhile...just keep taking deep breaths! :)

We haven't heard an absolute on whether there will be an upgrade from 3->4 ... -- Erg. I didn't mean to simply ignore the message Jody had received. I meant there hasn't been an official announcement as yet. Too early in the morning yet for me...:)

Lynn posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 11:00 AM

We will have upgrade pricing posted real soon now. Mac version is Q4 2001 (October-December) time frame. Since this is a new platform, we want to make sure we do it right. Anyone in San Francisco? MacWorld Expo SF follows right on the heels of Q4 2001... Best regards, Lynn Fredricks e-on software US Business Unit

Varian posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 11:10 AM

Ah, October not September. Thanks for correcting that, Lynn! I was thinking "September" from the "Q4" statement of the press release. Just goes to show that I was hoping the fourth quarter would be earlier this year. :)

jarm posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 11:11 AM

Lynn Any ideas of the timeframe for PC? Are we looking days, weeks or a couple of months. Be careful how you respond, I can find out where you live :-) That was a joke, seriously, I'd never resort to threats to get a new software package, even Vue, honest, don't look like that, no, don't, put down that gun.... Whoa, need to go find a life, I'm talking to myself in a chatroom, jeez....I need Vue 4. Jody

Lynn posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 1:05 PM

Cannot give an exact time frame right now, but Im hopeful to be able to give some meaningful feedback within the next week or so. Best regards, Lynn Fredricks e-on software US Business Unit

Thanks Lynn. ............................... Varian said, "...I was hoping the fourth quarter would be earlier this year..." You bet! Me too! It's starting to get entirely too hot outside! In another month I think I'll be doing FAR more snowy scenes...... ;)

bloodsong posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 5:59 PM

hey.... and remember, we all want to pre-order our vue 4. like a month in advance! ;)

bloodsong posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 6:00 PM

oh... and i wanted to ask about ordering -- if i'm in the us will i be ordering from the us branch this time??

Fox-Mulder posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 6:26 PM

I don't do Poser Animations, other than simple graphics, so I don't really care- but I think Bryce 5 will try to feature Poser Animations within Bryce 5 as its "big new feature", since it will be hard to top the other new features list VUE 4 is putting out... So at some point VUE 4 (or beyond) will have to have an answer for this one...

MikeJ posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 6:32 PM

I always wondered why CL didn't have some of the Bryce-type animation ability in Poser 4 to begin with..... And I also have to wonder just how much Corel is counting on Bryce to bring home more bacon....

Here's Konan's page about this. As a fellow Canuck, Konan is only a hop, skip and a jump from Corel. Perhaps Corel will buy into Konan's solution if it's really workable?... MetaCreations was supposed to make Poser, RayDream and Bryce work inter-changably years ago. They sorta-had a Poser 2 RayDream thing briefly in one version but it disappeared. Actually, all these MetaCreations divisions were extremely uncooperative with one another. Seems like they did more internal fighting than working together...

smallspace posted Thu, 17 May 2001 at 7:31 PM

Uh Mike, since it's Corel, would that be "Canadian Bacon"? :) -SMT (someone had to say it!)

"However, you won't be able to order through our website but only via mail or fax." Oh boo hoo! Ordering through the website is so convenient; I'm going to miss that option. :/

Fox-Mulder posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 3:34 AM

Actually, if VUE 4 can fully import Poser scenes, I don't see anything that would really prevent Poser animation within VUE 4. The VUE software guys just need to do some VUE Mover animation tweaks...

bloodsong posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 8:17 AM

heyas; despite the fact that metacreations bought bryce, poser, and ray dream, those programs were all created by totally different people and teams. they had NOTHING in common! so, basically, that's why they never really worked together. :) ray dream 5.2 imports poser 3 pz3 files. but not poser 4 pz3 files. :/ ::sigh:: well, i dont use ray dream for rendering or scene building any more, so i guess it doesnt matter. i'm not sure that poser animation 'specs' would match vue specs. its the same problem that bryce had: the bryce guys made their own animation style and codes, then the poser guys made theirs... with nothing in common. so i have my doubts that vue will read poser animations. vue's animations are really pretty simplistic. i mean, there's no ik and all. and i wonder what will happen to the seam-welding of poser figures....?

Fox-Mulder posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 5:21 PM

heyas Bloodsong, I can't speak with authority on the software technicalities, but if Konan has found a way (which I've seen and appears to work) to bring Poser animations into Bryce 4, I feel it could certainly be done in the new Vue 4... Bryce 4 has God-Aweful slow rendering, Bryce 5 beta-testers only report a 10% render speed increase in Bryce 5. This tells me that they have NOT changed their render engine. Poser animations brought into Bryce 5 will still be S L O W to render... Vue 4, by totally "re-writing" their render engine with a 40% speed increase over Vue 3, and directly importing Poser scenes, tells me that Poser Animations within Vue 4 SHOULD be EASIER to accomplish, IF this is tweaked into Vue 4's animation module. And why NOT? If you are totally re-writing your software to work with Poser scenes, I think SOMEONE has to be thinking about the animation "hooks" as well. Why re-write something and totally overlook that?... The way Pro-Pack and Konan's True-Pose software works is really to create an "instance" within the host software. Once inside this "package", animation is possible. Vue 4 would just have to allow its animation hooks to flow with the instance package. Obviously I can't speak for (and don't know)what Vue's software guru's are thinking about this, but they MUST be aware of this, I'm sure... Actually, its maybe more of a "political problem" with Curious Labs than a technical problem. Does allowing Poser animations in Vue 4 damage Pro-Pack's reason for existance? Answer: (I think) NO, Pro-Pack is geared for Lightwave and MAX users who have already (presumably) shelled out big bucks for their high-end apps and are used to buying expensive plug-ins. Pro-Pack does boning, Flash, etc. So- ALLOWING Vue 4 to do animations is NOT a threat to Pro-Pack, and IS a feature that should be allowed in Vue 4, by one means or another...

bloodsong posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 6:20 PM

heyas; i have no idea. :) SOMEbody (i dont know if it was konan or not) was talking about converting poser animations to midi format (seriously) as a way to import the animation information into bryce or whatever. i have no idea how konan does it. pro pack doesnt have anything to do with animation. well, yeah, except the max/lightwave plugins (plug-outs)? pro pack doesnt do REAL boning, anyway. people who have vue arent gonna buy pro pack for animation. if they need it at all, it'll be for the 4 views and character creation enhancements.

Varian posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 8:55 PM

If I were to take a guess (and this is just a guess), I'd think the e-on gurus would absolutely already be thinking about Poser animation. Since it isn't on the list of v.4 features, that probably only means it hasn't been fully worked out as yet. You know how they hate to pre-announce something that isn't quite "there" yet. But, although we in this forum, don't generally do much with animation, Vue isn't called "Vue/Mover" for nothing. Someone in the e-on think tanks is very big on animation. :)

Fox-Mulder posted Fri, 18 May 2001 at 11:14 PM

From the Vue 4 Press Release... "Vue 4 will add MPEG 1, MPEG 2, Quicktime, RealMovie, Quicktime VR,..." You don't re-write your software renderer and add these types of animation output options without a REAL ANIMATION PLAN. I think more will be revealed as we go along... I also think a much "closer" collaboration is in the works between Poser and VUE than has been made public so far...
