In 1909 a French inventor described a ship with a flat deck that would serve as an ocean-going landing field for aircraft.  Soon afterward ships were modified to experiment with this concept.  Although several were outfitted to carry aircraft in WW I, it wasn't until the 1920s that full-length flat deck carriers appeared.

I decided to experiment with this myself, stripping the Massena hull of most of its superstructure and installing a full flight deck.  This doesn't represent any actual early aircraft carrier but draws on features of many built up to and into WW II.

Initial mods:

Further along - Like some early carriers, the stacks are side-mounted to direct smoke away from the flight deck.
