FireFly is a Reyes render engine and unlike cycles it's not confined by the physics of light. It's will do mostly anything it's told, even breaking the laws of physics. This also means it doesn't do any of the things light does without being told to.
Here's a fairly simple comparison between Tempest(FF) and Cycles(SF). Both doing basically the same thing.

Thanks Nerd! That's a start. The Fresnel node produces refraction and reflection in my test scene, as advertised. However, if I apply the FF shader to a flattened box to simulate a glass pane, there doesn't seem to be any light going through the back face. I'm assuming that's a problem with my render settings. It took me a while to figure out decent SF settings, so I wouldn't be too surprised.

Ah, never mind, I just needed to increase the number of raytrace bounces.
