Just upgraded from Poser 11 to 13. Been using Poser from when Posette was the Queen of 3D characters. Which makes me an old Guy? Well, Poser hasn’t made me an Old Guy my age has. This is only the second post I have ever made at these forums. The first was yesterday had very good results, this will be my second. If you don’t know to get a fifty dollar discount you have to upgrade from 11 to 12 first getting a serial number. Then, upgrade to 13 from 12. Thought that was pretty dorky first know I am glad it worked out this way. Fired up poser 13 and loaded a scene I was working in Poser 11. Went for the gold, in the render setting picked Highest for cpu, the render took forever and sucked. Immediately loaded Poser twelve and began to investigate where I am going on wrong. Used Poser 12’s startup scene with default lighting with what’s her name, a one piece suit and some hair, for the first test. Loaded it into Poser 13, again best cpu, render settings, and timed the renders. Poser 13 Great render very quickly, Poser 12, good render slower then 13, Poser 11 slowest but still a descent render. Poser 12 and 13 were more vibrant colors less grainy, 13 were pretty much perfect, Just like advertized. Took a scène had cobbled together by taking props from other scenes making a basement. With the sole purpose to use all these PBR textures I had collected. Next test scene, Rendered in 13 first 4:30 minutes and a crap render, the character has a pink torso, real junk. Next Poser 12, 3:18 minutes, a decent render. Last Poser 11, 4:23 minutes probably the best render. Attached these renders with Poser 13’s render settings. Poser 12 is basically the same settings, Poser 11 has no Adaptive sampling. Eliminated Poser 11 in the next test I know all too well when you increase the Pixel samples without Adaptive sampling. So for the new test increase the Pixel samples by 10. From 15 to 25, this would mean I think a 100 times more pixels will be sampled. Rendered next test, Poser 13, 13:20 minutes decent render, Poser 12 8:02 minutes and a better render then 13. I am positive I am doing something wrong. Would say I am hoping that I am doing something wrong, but at my age you will discover hope is undiscovered despair. So, I am positive I am an idiot and need guidance on how to get those great renders in Poser 13. What am I doing wrong in Poser 13 render settings? Thank You in advance!

If you could post a screenshot of your render settings and your render results, it would help us figure out what's wrong.

Also exactly what you are trying to render. Which figure etc., in addition to your aforementioned render settings and results.
Oh. And lights. Lights, background etc. They also make a huge difference.
You are also not saying whether it's Superfly or Firefly.

I keep attaching my renders but for some reason they are not show up. I will try again

Are you using the new P13 textures for LaFemme that came with P13? Also, your pixel samples are set to 0?

Hi Iklorio!
I’m reluctant to jump in here because undoubtedly others who regularly post to these forums know considerably more about Poser’s technical features than I. Yet, your post prompted me to respond from a photographer/graphic artist perspective.
First and foremost (and no offence intended because this is a comment for the entire community) your self-depreciating comment about being an idiot is grossly misplaced. Anyone who, as you have, seeks knowledge is not an idiot. I’ve never bought a “Anything for Dummy’s” book because I thought it entirely offensive that anyone seeking knowledge should have to label him/herself a dummy to receive it. Yet, I’ll agree some who regularly contribute to these forums inappropriately assume the rest of us, who are looking for knowledge, have their level of real or imagined sophistication.
With that (likely unwarranted) introduction, I have to say I lost track of your rendering issues somewhere in mid-post (again, no offense intended). As I am also an old guy, perhaps the following may suggest a path forward.
As a photographer, I started to use Adobe Photoshop 2.5 to correct digital images back in the day. As I can’t draw, I bought Poser 2.0 to create figure poses that I could print, trace, and scan into digital images I imported into Photoshop. Fast forward through digital photography, I eventually strived to create photorealistic images made up of entirely 3D graphics, which is still my goal today. Reading the forums, I recognize that digital artists are—as appropriate—all over the spectrum. Each of our rendering results depend upon our individual objectives. Recently, many who tout the cycles render engine have posted their results. From my perspective—again as a photographer—many of the cycles renders of human skin look flat to me. Faces are symetrical and skin color is uniform. While we all would love to have such perfect skin, few actually do. Having played around with Poser 11, Poser 12, and Poser 13 renders, I still get the best skin renders using a cut and paste method of Face Off’s Original Realistic Skin Shader, which pre-dates Poser 11. I add EverntMobil’s wetskin and Exem’s goosebumps and have a photorealistic image –all rendered in firefly. To date, I’ve been unable to recreate that image in superfly. My point is one should focus on what his/her artwork requires as opposed to whatever technological advancements the program offers. If those advancements further your art—great. But if not, rely upon what you want/need. Overall, Poser 13 is considerably more stable than Poser 11 or 12. For my art, I want consistency and reliability. Poser 13’s firefly rendering is faster and more stable than earlier versions.

The samples he has set to 0 are a minimum. I have that too with no issues. Are you using the new P13 textures for LaFemme that came with P13? Also, your pixel samples are set to 0?

To fix the grain in the render, you'll need more samples. Maybe try the ultra settings. For improved speed, I've found that the progressive refinement slows things down. Also, you might try reducing your bucket size. When I was doing CPU renders, I found that a bucket size of 16 worked best. But I was using an old machine. I know others have said they had the best results with 64. You'll need to experiment, probably on a simple, small scene.
As far as the pink, I'm not sure. I'll admit I'm having trouble following the long paragraph and keeping it all straight. Which version was that? And what shader is that on her?

Also in the top image, note that your message bubble is yellow. That's an indication of an error and might help you fix some of your problems.

Thank you everyone, this render pixels samples are set to 15 adaptive sampling .001. My problem I Poser 13 is Slower and the quality is not as good as Poser 11,and 12. I have increased the Pixel samples to 25 in another test Poser 12 was five and half minutes faster then Poser 13. Last night I tried it in Poser 11 with no adaptive sampling it was two minutes longer then Poser 13 and a much better Quality render then 13. I am not an Artist I am a duffer, used original Poser Purchase for our small business when we decided to put a website up. First used still images, then an animation on the website. Have all the Poser upgrades except Poser 8. Had all but given up on Poser at 11, but saw a good thread on this forum. The thread was about a review of Poser 13, in that thread I saw people taking old characters and building them into new Characters. I thought hey, that's me! I too do the same thing take parts of old buildings and make new buildings, change there textures. make Primitive props into doors, ceilings, floors. Also take older characters and chisel away at them in poser and save the shape as a morph target. That thread had some good renders, with the promise of Quality faster Renders I took the plunge. This is why I still believe there is something in Poser 13 render settings I am missing. Going start a new test today, changing the bucket size as suggested.

Hi there
If you rendering with CPU,try to use lower bucket like 16 or 32 you need to find perfect balance,128 is quite big bucket size for CPU,if you are using Nvidia GPU then I would start with 512 or 256 and try area lights as well, for indoor scenes area lights are best
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
