I was looking for some time for a dirndl-dress, that I can use in Poser as dynamic dress and recently found a wavefront obj at CG-Trader and thought, that it might be possible to use it.

I can import the dress to Poser as expected and it renders pretty nice .... but when I create a cloth simulation and start it, it always fails at frame 0.
Was it a wrong assumption that I might be able to use it, or are there just some things I miss. Any suggestion is appreciated.

that looks like it has many layers and separate pieces. It may be too complicated for Poser to handle. You might be able to separate the various layers and sym each piece (top, dress, apron) separately.
Another problem might be stray vertices. You'd have to take it into a modeler to find those.

Ok, that it might be too complicated was my first thought too. The idea to separate it into more pieces sounds pretty good. I will try to do so with blender ..... without really knowing how to use it probably :-)
Did you mean vertices that are not connected probably with stray vertices? I had such issues with conforming clothes that I used as dynamic ones by exporting them to obj and reimporting to Poser. But in that case the simulation normally worked, only the result was useless (but the problem could be fixed with blender too). Or is there something else I should look at?

I was thinking of vertices that aren't connected. I've had that issue on occasion. Good luck with Blender. There is a forum here https://www.renderosity.com/forums/12460/blender that has people that can help answer questions.

I guess I will have to give up with this one. I found out some things about it in Blender, one is that there are hundred thousands of identical vertices in the dress. I removed them with the merge option of blender, but it still was not working in poser. As well I tried to reduce it on just a small part (single layer) of the dress .... and it didn't work.
Maybe there is a way to get it to work in Poser, but I won't manage to do so.
I have a second dirndl, unfortunately I like it less and it's only conforming and has a lot of these stray vertices. But I have now learned to use the merge command in blender, maybe I get it to work as dynamic dress without manually manipulating every one of these vertices

The cloth room doen not like layers. They get tangled up easily so you will have to separate. Also check if the cloth model is not 'double', I.e. modeled with cloth thickness.
It may help to declare some parts to be 'soft decoration', or ' constrained'.

Tangential, has any-one managed to get eg DS' d-force 'dynamic' clothes, exported as OBJ, to dynamically fit Poser figures such as LaF ??

Yes, this was fit onto Lafemme in poser and then draped in the cloth room

Here's a rough render of it from the front

Bravo !!!
This may tempt me into yet-again trying to drape 'dynamic' cloth...
( Priority is replacing two pairs of old taps: They only need new rubber washers, but stem covers have seized-solid and there are no local isolators. So, those, too... )

It isn't truly a plumbing project without at least 3 trips to the hardware store.
When you get the time, if you need help with the cloth room, don't be afraid to ask questions. It was a few years before I got it and now, I can't live without it. I even drape some conforming clothing.
