in my stage setup, things seem ok now, but I noticed there's an large wall in between the curtains an the cast; it doesn't show in the front view. what is it?

Are you sure you are looking at a wall? It could be far edges of the stage that you are seeing from the side view. Try selecting it and looking at the Parameters/Properties panel see if it is marked as visible.

good point, hb, and you were right, I disappeared it for now. thanks.

and then I had to make it visible again because it disappeared the stage beneath their feet!

Render the scene and determine if it appears in the final image.
