My old computer died, and I got a new one. Probably spent more than I should, but I tend to use my computers for a long time.

Years ago, when my old computer and Poser 11 were new, someone explained what settings I should use. I recall it made big difference. So...what settings should I use?

In particular, how many threads? It's supposedly a i9-14900K processor with 24 cores, 32 threads, 3.2GHz to 5.6GHz. Last time, someone told me it's not a good idea to let Poser use all the threads available.

Graphics card is a GeForce RTX 4090 with 24GB. Render settings give me a choice of Nvidia GeForce, OptiXNividia GeForce, and the CPU. Which one should I pick?

I cannot answer all of your questions, but I can say that if you are trying for realistic renders, under Render Settings you select the Nvidia GeForce option. CPU should almost never be selected.

I'd go with the Optix option. It is so much faster than anything else. And while I'm no expert, I've always been under the impression you want software to use all the threads if needed. Having it use less than that might be for if you want to multitask.

Thanks! I never used CPU with Poser 11. but I seem to recall people saying CPU is better with some graphics cards.

Yes, I think the reason was so you could use your computer for other things while Poser is rendering.

I will give Optix a try. I bought Poser 13 awhile ago, but was still mostly using Poser 11. I had no idea Optix was a thing.

If you have an OptiX option, i highly recommend it on new(er) rigs. The render speed alone in P13 combined with that is a game changer.

I don't believe Optix was available in Poser 11. And if you're using the GPU for rendering, you won't be using much CPU power because the GPU is doing the heavy lifting. And using larger buckets will also speed up GPU rendering. I often have mine at 2048 vs 32 for CPU. You'll have to test to see what's the fastest and what your computer can handle for your scenes. Some of my busier scenes, I shrink it some.

If I'm not wrong, any nvidia generation that come after the 20xx series isn't recognized by Poser11. The most powerful nvidia card to be used with Poser11 is the 2080Ti.

I have a 20xx series and while Poser 11 will render with the GPU, it doesn't have the Optix option and that makes so much difference in speed.

I use Poser 13 and win 10

Poser 11 only Supports RTX cards in the 20xx series. It doesn't have Optix

Poser 12 supports up to 30xx it has first generation Optix which is a little fast.

Poser 13 supports all current RTX cards and has 2nd generation Optix which is ludicrous fast.

The 4090 works great in the Optix setting. Just for fun I recommend setting up a scene (using Superfly) and rendering it all three ways: CPU, GeForce, and Optix. Compare the times. It's dramatic. But afterwards you'll stick with Optix for sure.

Finally got around to trying a benchmark. I used this one, from the Poser 11 days.

It took 20 minutes to render the scene in Poser 11, with my old computer. It was just under 14 minutes with Poser 12, also with my old computer.

With my new computer and Poser 13:

15 seconds with Optix

20 seconds with GPU

5 minutes 6 seconds with CPU
