E-on Software has now updated www.e-onsoftware.com to include details of Vue 4 and it's proposed shipping date. Best wishes Jody

Oh yeah, this is gonna be GOOD! Thanks for the update Jody!

Just checked it out. The upgrade price id $129.00.
MikeJ posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 5:49 AM
Yep. All I can say is that for a product like Vue, that is an amazingly good price. Even the full version is only $199.00 US!

It does kick major butt!! Us Brits are going to have to pay 7 more than you Americans...but who cares :D Vue4 seems to have all the stuff that I wished Vue3 had, except two major omissions. 1. No mention of any extra modelling tools or primitives (I may have missed that, I was like a kid in a candy shop at the time :D) 2. No object export, except the usual terrain :o( What excites me the most, is the caustics, OpenGL and...errmmm everything. Cheers

Are you jarm?...great, at least we can cry on each others shoulders when we have to get that extra 7 quid out of our pockets LOL! I took another look over at the e-on site (I know that I'm bias), but it is not only Corel who should start to worry, but Digital Element as well. For advanced animation World Builder still takes top spot, but I really cannot think of anything else that the Standard World Builder has, that Vue does not do. With the unlimited transparency, even Solid Growth vegetation can be used for a clip map library as large as WB's, and be used in forrest scenes :D Roll on mid June...I'm going to hardly get any sleep from all the anticipation of waiting for the release! Cheers

Where in the UK are you Cheers?

1. No mention of any extra modelling tools or primitives (I may have missed that, I was like a kid in a candy shop at the time :D) 2. No object export, except the usual terrain :o( -- I noticed those two omissions also. I think if they'd added export features, they definitely would have mentioned it, but possibly if they altered the primitives a little, maybe that's not worth a big mention? ::crossing fingers here:: I don't think export is very high on their list of priorities, since Vue isn't technically a modeling program. Still, I've had times where I've imported a model, then misplaced the original 3DS or whatever. So all I have left is VOB, which only works in Vue. Times like that, it would be awful nice to be able to export it, even if only in DXF. Lest anyone think I'm complaining -- no way! I am already thrilled with the new v.4 features and can hardly wait to start working with it! :)

I would have to agree with you Varian, the object export is not a major upset for me either, but it would be nice to have a few more primitives. Over the last few months I have been working on an animation (which is in no way finished, I have only just finished the storyboard), and hoped the main character could be built out of Vue primitives, especially if Vue4 just gave a little bit more power as far as basic primitive modelling was concerned. I may still be able to do it with the Vue3/Vue4 "modelling options", which would give me great satisfaction if I could make the entire animation 100% Vue :) Cheers

Well, it looks like Rhino is just going to have to wait! Rich
Varian posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 3:09 PM
I really love modeling in Vue, so my ideal would be to be able to eexport primitives with booleans intact. That doesn't seem to be likely in the near future, so I've been exploring modeling programs, looking for something that works as nicely as Vue. Closest I've found so far is Organica, but it has its own quirks to deal with. And LOL Rich! :)
tradivoro posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 4:08 PM
Why would you want booleans intact??? My whole gripe about booleans in bryce and vue is all that garbage in wireframe view... :) That's why I started to work with Rhino... No boolean garbage.. Cut off the excess and you're left with the shape you wanted... :)
Varian posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 4:25 PM
Erg, semantics, sorry. What I meant was that the boolean operation should survive the export. In other words, if you subtract cube A from sphere B, the ideal would be to be able to export a sphere with a cube-shaped hole in it, not to export a sphere/cube combo item. :)
MikeJ posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 4:32 PM
Vue does it the same way as bryce does, right? That is that the booleans are not "real" booleans, and the "missing" part is actually rendered transparent, as opposed to a "real" 3D boolean model which actually loses polygons in the process. At least that's how it was explained to me. Varian, dod you get the free Amapi 4 program from the magazine? Amapi does decent booleans, once you get past the retarded interface, that is. ;)
bloodsong posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 8:03 PM
hey; you brits can't pay 7 pounds more than us americans. cuz we aint paying in pounds! isnt the 129$ thing equivalent to the howevermany pound price, after conversion?
tradivoro posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 8:19 PM
Ah yes, thanks for the clarification there Varian... :) and Mike, yes, Vue does the same thing as bryce where it's not real boolean that loses polygons in the process...
Varian posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 8:41 PM
Mike, nope. No Amapi here. It's not just the boolean operations I'm looking for, but the ease of handling/positioning objects and the excellent interface Vue has. Those things are difficult to find all in one package (aside from Vue), although Max 4 has a decent four-way view at least.
MikeJ posted Wed, 23 May 2001 at 3:52 AM
So you're looking at MAX these days, Varian?
Varian posted Wed, 23 May 2001 at 5:56 PM
Hey, Max exports! I've also been playing with Strata3D and some other stuff. And it's all because of Vue, see? I really, really like modeling in Vue, but I also want to export. I know Vue doesn't have fancy modeling options like lathe, mesh, extrusion, etc. But I love what it does. I just want to be able to export too. ::sniffle::
