I have installed Vue 2.1 on my PC, free version given away by Computer Arts magazine. I tried giving it a shot yesterday, and today again but gave up due to multiple crashes...Is Vue in general that unstable, or that particular version of it? I run it on Win 98... Anybody having similar problems with it or knowing a "fix" for it? Thank you.

I remember a lot of folks had stability problems with v.2. The patch to 2.1 helped some, but v.3 helped a whole lot more. I started with v.2 myself, but didn't experience a high frequency of crashes. However, I also have found v.3 (3.1) to be generally more stable overall. The thing I learned was to save, save, and save again. :)

Yeah, this is what I have heard too. I never had Vue 2.1, but Vue 3.1 is overall very stable on my Windows 98 SE PC. You don't happen to have any Norton Utilities running in the background, do you? Norton "Crash Guard", for example, will kill Vue every time.....

With Vue 2, on a Pentium II-300 I had at this time, happend the following : When I downloaded the patch for Vue 2.1 and installed it as described by e-onsoftware, it did not install well. That's why I would ask you to have a look, after opening Vue 2.1 and in clicking at HELP--->ABOUT VUE, if the window shows 2.1 effectively. If not, install the patch again the following way : Unzip the patch for 2.1 in a temporary folder, then setup from there to the Vue directory. Its worth to give it a try, anyhow. Vue 2.1 should not crash so much. And don't forget to save your scene very often, even better under two different names, to have always a copy of your file. The only problem I had with Vue 2.1 crashing was with 64 RAM. When I brought the RAM up to 128, no more (or only very few) crashes. A funny thing : Vue d'Esprit version 1 absolutely never crashed. :-)Guitta

Thank you for replying! I do have Norton Utilities running in the background, yes. But Crash Guard is not installed. The "HELP--->About Vue" windows displays properly. Actually, I had not "looked" at it yet, just did and saw this in "system requirements": "Vued'Esprit 2 was designed to run under Windows 95 and Windows NT4." Sounds "silly" but could it be that it just won't run properly on Win 98? I wouldn't re-install 95 just for this application... Seems it'll just "lock"up after a while, everytime I try using it...It'll start not displaying properly (as in, one maximised view will go blank, then I'll try going back to a four views display, and they're all "shot")and the only way out is to control-alt-delete the whole thing... Hmmmmmmm...Pity, it looks interesting and I could use it... So, you are saying that more recent versions are crash-free? I guess I'll have to check them out... Thank you, anyway.

LOL...well, maybe more recent versions aren't "crash-free", but at least Vue 3 is much more stable than it's predecessor. I would turn off your Norton Utilities (all of them) that are running in the background...I have trouble with them too. Actually, turn off anything running in the background that you don't really need (except a firewall maybe). Vue is very processor and ram hungry and giving it all you can is always a good idea :). It will run on Win98, so don't worry about the OS. Sorry if I implied 3.1 was crash-free, it's not. In comparison to v.2, it is, but only in comparison. :) The symptoms you're describing indicate running low on memory. That would include RAM and ROM, so if you have the drive space, you could try increasing the size of your swap file. That won't cure the problem, but it might help reduce it.

Yes Varian, the swap file is a very good point...forgot that one ;). Laurie

I have the same version from the magazine and have the same problems. I have 256Mb of RAM so I don't think that is the problem. The only thing I have running in the background is McAfee. Does anyone know if this causes the same problems as Norton crashguard?
Daffy34 posted Wed, 20 June 2001 at 11:26 AM
Yep, probably. Antivirus programs really play hell with other programs and also use more of your system resources than you might think. I would turn it off before using Vue or any other graphics app for that matter :). Laurie

Get Norton Utilities out of you computer! It causes endless problems for everyone I know,It's apile of crap. They didn't even make most of the programs that make up the software. I was very unhappy when I put it in my computer, and ended up reformatting immediately(Anyone want to buy Nortin Utilities?).

I use the free (and really great) INOCULATE antivirus program and always turn it off (as well as some other resident programs (like UNINSTALLER) I don't need all the time) before using Vue. I also have 256 RAM, but Vue works faster and better when all these programs are turned off. :-)Guitta
