Hello all, Julian_Boolean here. I'm new to Renderosity (but not to RDS) and I'm thrilled to finally find an active group of users. I've searched the web from time to time for a site just like this and all I've found are tumbleweed-strewn ghost towns. I was beginning to feel like the last RDS user on earth. I've lurked here for a few days and now I'd like to post. Attached is a collage of the "Windigo" which was modeled and rendered in RDS v5.5 with texturemaps generated in CorelDraw and Corel PhotoPaint. The bottom frame was composited in Corel PhotoPaint 8 with a background created in that app. I'm so inspired by this site and the great work I've seen here that I'll try to whip together something for this month's competition. By the way, if anyone knows of a good book or tutorial on scene lighting, I'd love to hear about it, as that's the area where I feel I'm making the slowest progress. I look forward to your comments. -Julian

This is Incredible workmanshift Julian. It's a Great Ship. And no, i am using RDS 5.0.2 and happy to know you are using CorelDraw and Photo-Paint. I am using the version 10 now with the SP1 installed, working smoothly now. Renderosity is a good place, since i have logged in the first time i always look at the forums each days and get great info on what do to sometimes. But for the moment, the only thing i have put out RDS is this (the orders are still in the WIP section).

Your ship is incredible! Excellent model; like Brent said, the elements look like they DO something.... I don't have any particular recommendations for 3D lighting tutorials, but honestly any good photography or cinematography text will give you the basics. It's just a matter of translating reality into RDS space.... And like everyone said, welcome! Even though lots of folks here have moved on to Carrara, the programs are still similar enough to get great advice and ideas. Plus, there are several of us RDS dinosaurs here.... (Grrr, litst.)

I'd like to thank you all for your positive comments on the Windigo. A couple of you mentioned that all of parts look like they "do something", and that is correct. This model has its origins in a sci-fi story written by a good friend of mine in which the ship is described in detail. I got a good mental snapshot of the vessel and was able to reproduce it in RDS. To Pleiades specifically, I like the image you posted. Where did that great marble shader come from? And you mentioned that you're using Corel 10 - have you used versions five through eight? They came with a program called CorelDream which was my introduction to raytracing. It was a super-stripped down verions of RayDream 3D, but it was a great program to get started in. Thanks again to all, Julian
