I know that a lot of you model stuff in other 3D programs, so I just wanted to let you know (if you didn't already) that 3DWorld magazine has a 15 day FULL demo of 3ds max 4. And I do mean full. No disabled save, no watermark, nothing like that. But it will time out after 15 days. If you've ever wanted to try one of the big boys, now is your chance. Just thought some of you guys might like to know! :)

Eovia is giving away a full free version of Amapi 4.15 at their site. A great little nurbs/polygon modelling program that will expand your Bryce scenes. You have to click on the other link there to get the serial number. It's a full true version, go get it while it's there, It's a great 3D tool to have in your toolbox. kaom

Ok, the 3ds max is something I wanted to try. Thanks. Good call.

ledenko posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 2:16 PM

Hmmmm... What's the link to the max demo?

miden1138 posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 4:04 PM

Ledenko, it's not a link, its a magazine. From England. It's a really good one too. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in 3D work.

A demo of max is great, but do you have $3500 to go buy it after the demo has expired? The Amapi download is free and it will never expire, it's a very serious 3D modelling program. FREE NURBS PEOPLE! it will let you make anything you want, and it's used professionally in 3D a lot. It's worth the download, I promise, go get it and see for yourself, it will let you make things for bryce that you can't do without spending BIG money on something like max. The version for free is v4.15, the new version is v6, but the differences are small. By the wat if you buy Carrara right now for $399, you get Amapi v5 plus all the plugins for Carrara with the deal. If anyone is looking for a cheap modelling package, this is the deal. kaom

Oh, I just automaticaly thought that it's on the net, the idea of a real magazine never ocurred to me... Just shows how much we are hooked on internet :)

kaom posted Tue, 10 July 2001 at 6:42 PM

FREE NURBS!!!! NOT A DEMO!!!! IS ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION??? NURBS = NON UNIFORM RATIONAL B-SPLINE OBJECTS! THE REAL DEAL! DEMOS ARE WORTHLESS UNLESS YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY THE REAL THING AFTER IT HAS EXPIRED, MAX COSTS $3500, AMAPI IS FREE! CAPISH! kaom

Kaom, I've had Amapi myself. (Got it off of the same magazine, as a matter of fact. For FREE!!!) I don't think anyone here is knocking it or ignoring you. I just wanted to let people know that I had found a demo of max 4 that they could try if they wanted to. That's all. And BTW, can Amapi do particle effects? No. Can Amapi do animation? No. It is a great modeler and I do like it, but please, I was just trying to give everyone a heads up about 3ds max. Do try to stay on the topic. ;-)

I'm glad you turned people on to the demo. Max is an incredible program, but most people I know can't spend that kind of money. I really think Bryce users who have a little money to invest should look into the Carrara deal right now, I've used Carrara since it came out and love it, it's like the poormans 3D Studio Max. And it does paticle effects and animation. If you can affored Max I say go buy it, it will do things nothing else can touch for the money. I wasn't pointing anything at you miden1138. By the way what is the 1138 for? THX1138? Just wondering, what a great movie. I just wanted to alert people to Amapi for free, cause it is a great deal. By the way, next month in Computer Arts(the same company in England that does the 3D mag)is giving away a free full version of Amorphium. kaom

Thank you for the heads up on the Amapi 4.15 Kaom.... I have downloaded it and am working with it....modeling is new to me so it poses to be an interesting adventure further into the world of 3D art.....They give you the full program and the registration number.... ;o) And thank you Miden1138 for the heads up on the 3D Studio Max 4. I have it now and intend on checking it out as well.... The magazine is excellent too. 8-) The info provided by both of you is much appreciated. Swade

Kaom, First, sorry if I sounded a little rough. Bad day. :-( And yes, it is for THX1138. Good job, I think you are the only one who has caught it and asked.

kaom posted Wed, 11 July 2001 at 10:27 PM

1138 huh? The other part of my name is 1.6181, kaom is the name of my band also. Can you guess what 1.6181 is? No problem, I'm not sensitive, we all have bad days, and we were both making very valid points. Peace kaom

Ok, maybe we can age past 12 and enjoy the offer that miden pointed out. I've always wondered what the program was like. Its a chance to play and try it out without spending the bucks. As far as I know, 3d max is the top program in the world (second only to Bryce). What a delight to have a shot at using it for free. As for amapi, I use that and appreciate the free version. Its incredible and if you visit the amapi forum you will see some really good tutorials in the forum with a dismal response. Someone has worked hard to help us out and we should recognize and support that effort. I also use Metasequoia and love it. Many folks use hammapatch, spatch, spiralizer, elefont, Matisse, PTE, starbits, universe, etc, etc. For hobby stuff and home use, the freebies are great. For the artist that uses oils, acrylics, graphite, wax/bronze, etc, the electronic tools are an interesting media to use ... and exploring tools is an investment worth a thousand words. Stifle the suggestions of others and you don't grow. Thanks miden, thanks a lot for sharing that with us and please, share again when you see something interesting.

EricofSD, What do you mean past the age of 12?
