I have carrara and it won't take jpg, but it will allow me to use illustrator vector files. Is there a plugin out there? I swear I saw one a while back. Thanks

I believe that Carrara will take Illustrator paths. I am pretty sure you can load a jpg as a background image. What exactly are you trying to do?

You can use a jpg as a background, or you can wrap it (a number of differentt ways) around a 3d object as a texture or transparency map. If you're trying to extrude it as a 3d object, you're right, you have to convert it to vector first. I usually use CorelTrace for that (not an killustrator plugin, it's a part of CorelDraw).

adobe Streamline will convert an image to paths if that is what you are interested in doing.

Yes, I am trying to extrude it. Just looking for and easy way. I found a site that has woodwork profiles from all styles and eras. If only there was a really easy way to get those jpgs into vector and voila! Instant molding. I'll take a look at coreltrace and streamline. Thanks!

Sounds like a fun project. Are we talking little profiles for baseboard moldings and stuff, or big profiles that you could use for a mantel? Yes, CorelTrace or Streamline are exactly what you need. Either will give you an extrudable berzier from your .jpg outlines.

Well duh. Sorry my brains not working to quick today. You can also take your image, make a selection, convert it to a path, and then export it. Just go to export paths to Illustrator. A little more work, but would probably save a few bucks.

Great idea about export paths. I'm going to give it a try. Wiz, I'm working on all of the above. Trying to duplicate a detailed older Victorian house. I think I'll even model the old style twist and pushbutton light switches. Not enough hours in a day, unfortunately. Probably gonna be a while....
