Look what censorship has done for careers. My favorite examples: Rushdi "The Satanic Verses". That book is nearly unreadable. (I only made it about 1/3 through, and I have no trouble with "Speak Memory" or "War and Peace"). Kohemeni's ban literally increased sales of this book by a factor of 1000 (from a university press item to months on the New York times best seller list). Mapplethorp, just about any of his works. The censorship and controversy is what brought him to the public eye. Although I find his work (when he's not trying too hard to be shocking) to be absolutly brilliant. His photos of Grace Jones and Whoopie Goldberg are incredible. "The Last Temptation of Christ". Would this movie have made it out of the small "art theater" circuit and into mainstream theaters without the intradiction from the Vatican? It just isn't that good. Jock Sturgis "Last Days of Summer". If there hadn't been an organized campaign of pressure (and sabotage) against the major bookstore chains, this probably would have remained a small run specialty item. Come on, admit it, how many of you have read books, seen movies, or listened to songs simply because this group or that spoke out against them, banned them, or burned them? And we should now add Christine's works. How many hits was her site getting before this controversy, and afterword? How many print orders?
