How do i make big waves in vue? I know it says it in the book but its too long and complicated and i dont have time for that. Anyone got a way to get realistic waves, without "half-assing"it? Thanks

I'm a Bryce user and I love making waves. From what I understand Vue has something similar to Bryce's Symmetrical lattice. And I believe you could do something close to what I do in Bryce. Here is a little tutorial on my wave making technique, hopefully it will work for you in Vue. There are some other wave images in my gallery here in renderosity to check out, I hope this will be of help to you, if you have any questions, let me know. Good luck, kaom

Basicly it works almost the same way in Vue. Choose a symmetrical lattice and load the picture for the shape. That's all. Joerg

ooooh! im just curious, why is it that shape on the bottom? i ran into one problem with vue 4's symmetrical terrain: it wasn't solid through the middle. clipping it like this might put a hole in it. :/

I think it's that shape bloodsong because when a wave comes ashore and you are close enough to see it, it causes turbulence underwater too by current that's flowing in a different direction. There will be color shifts and shapes under the water too, so I think that is why the shape is this way. It should cause irregular refractions and reflections when there is another wave in front or behind it, making those nice color differences. I think ;). Laurie

The shape at the bottom is to make the waves end points level. If I make the bottom surface of the wave flat, the end points of the wave stick up in the air, it took me a lot of trial and error to arrive at this and for me it works much better than a flat bottom. Plus it makes the wave look more realistic. There are some others in my gallery. I'm not familiar with Vue lattice tool, so I can't really give any tips on using it, but I do have to plip the wave in Bryce on occasion to get the profile of the wave clean.

...if you have Vue 4, just study my image "waves" what is on the CD :-) They are all made from terrains, even the splashes and the foam. You can make higher waves the same way. :-)Guitta

Thanks Laurie and Varian. If you remember, this image was created with Vue 3.1. I just have changed the lights and colors then in Vue 4 :-) The waves also can be done this way in Vue 2.1. Guitta
