Just posted my last RDS graphic (switching over to Carrara) in the galleries section. It's a large poster sized info-graphic of a 4 block area in San Antonio done over a 3 week period with 6 other artists. At 84 megs, the central image was the largest single Ray Dream file I've ever worked on, with hundreds of texture maps and tons of modeled buildings, cars etc. At 200 DPI my 733 mhz G4 Mac with a gig of ram rendered the scene in just under 3 hours. The file also bogged down the redraw and I had to switch to wireframe to get the job done. So it got me wondering about other people's experiences with really big files and if Carrara is handling them any better than RDS.

I'm working on a couple of scenes right now in Carrara. One is a futuristic laptop model done in Rhino, very detailed, keys, ports etc...... The other is a car I'm working on, The wheels and tires alone were huge, the redraw time was slwed down dramatically. But so far it hasn't crashed. I'd say it is handling these better than RDS handled big stuff. Inthe end My car will probobly be over 100MB in size, it's already at about 60 MB. Time will tell.

The RDS 5.02 file for my last image was about 80 Mo. I rendered the scene in 72 dpi in 1600 x 700 in 11 hours on a Duron 920 and 917 Mo RAM. Fabien3D CREAFab, la crtion numique autrement...brenthomer posted Mon, 13 August 2001 at 8:20 AM
I just did an animation in carrara and in the render cue it said the texture size was 72gig..how that happens i have no ideal but the folder that everything was saved in was like 13gig. Oddly enough I think the .car file was only like 100k.
