Whenever I am building a scene and want to bring in a model from another file that I have created I have problems with the shaders. When I initially render the file all the shaders are fine. If I save the file, close it and then reopen the imported models all receive the default shader. Is there a solution where the imported model will keep the shaders from the previous file? Any advice would be appreciated Thanks

hmm this question is a bit confusing to me. 1) Are you saying that you make a scene in Carrara and save it. Then when you load the scene the models are missing your textures? 2) Or are you saying that after you save the scene and try to bring your models into another scene they dont have the altered texures from your previous scene? If #1 are you saving the file with textures/shaders internal or external? If #2 you need to resave your model individually (export). Am I to basic? Way off?

I think number 2 is closer to my dilema. When I create a scene for new packaging as an example. There are times when I want to bring an older model into the same scene. I have tried importing and pasting the older model into the scene and the model imports or pastes into the new scene fine. It will even render properly with all the textures and shaders in place as long as I don't close the file. The problem is when I save the file and then close it. When I re-open the file to do more work all the models that I have pasted into the new scene get the new scenes default shader. But if I follow what your telling me, I have to save the file with shaders saved internally. Thats sounds logical, thanks for the info, I'll see if that works.

Hi Memaci, Maybe the shaders from the two files have the same name ? I've noticed that Carrara won't want to override the shaders in the "target" scene, in this case . So try to rename the master shaders before you save the file . Tell me if it helps . litst

Hello Memaci, The best way to handle this within Carrara is by useing the objects tray. As you complete an object, drag it into the objects tray so you can simply drag into your final scene later. (I've got folders for each project.) This technique prevents corruption of shaders (shaders with the same name simply occur as "Shader Name"1, "Shader Name" 2 etc. Also, it prevents cameras, render sizes, light intensities and other things from changing like they do when you import a Carrara or RDS file/object into your working scene. Additionally, should the final scene become corrupted you still have access to the components separately. Mark www.MarkBremmer.com

Thanks to all for the fast feedback. I will try all those techniques very soon. I have to finish some traditional 2-D freelance projects before I get my hands back into my 3-D projects. I've mostly been a silent participant for a few months reading all the postings at this site but I wanted to say thanks to all, it is a very helpful and very inspiring place to gather info for Carrara. I also wanted to say thanks to litst, I believe you are the creator of Real World Metals. Not only has this shader pack helped numerous images I have worked on but disecting the shader trees has helped me to understand better how the Carrara shaders work so I can create my own shaders. Again - many thanks memaci

Memaci - Thanks for your interrest in Real World Carrara Metals . I'm glad you're enjoying them, and the forum too . And don't be shy ! We're just here to try to help each other, after all :) Mark - Your trick is really good to know, i'll do this next time . Having a lot of shaders to rename was very annoying for my last image . Thanks for sharing :) litst
