Perhaps you mean Japanese? The term you used though probably just a shortening of the name is considered to be derrogatory.

jamball77 it offended me and I'm not even Japanese. Haven't heard that term used in a long time, but I would imagine we will be hearing it more now that people are entranced with the Pearl Harbor thing. I didn't see the movie myself, and probably won't. Lived through it when my dad fought in the war and got enough of it then. Marque

Jap? What year is it--1942? Shouldn't give him the URLs till he says he's sorry.
genny posted Sun, 23 September 2001 at 3:04 PM
Hey, does FUCK YOU, offend you? Well, if it doesn't then you can just go on referring to the "Japanese" as "JAPS"., but if it does, then MAYBE, you need to think about what you are saying. The term "Japs" was invented by "American" citizens, and never a term that any "Japenese" American, ever, called them-selves. Maybe, you are from another country, but really, you should know, and realize that, the term "JAPS" is really, totally un-acceptable here! I would like to think that this country "USA", has finally become "ONE" country, but with people like you around.......WHO KNOWS? GEnny

Genny I couldn't have said it better myself. Too bad we can't seem to get over this name thing and just realize we're all people. Marque

The guys in Japan are real artists and have certainly done nothing to incur disrespect. Most of us highly value their contributions. We certainly do not wish them to feel unwelcome. If you did this out of ignorance, apologise, take your beating and learn the lession. If you did this on purpose, you are invited to leave.

Uh... Did you happen to think that maybe, just MAYBE, the guy shortened the word cos the topic of his message was already very long? Or maybe he has no idea the word Jap has any negative meanings? I surely wouldn't have known. genny says we should know but how is a foreigner supposed to know that? Let's not flame anyone for something like this!
Larry F posted Sun, 23 September 2001 at 5:39 PM
Well, he could have re-WORDED it if it was too long. Perhaps he didn't mean to offend, but it still is offensive! More so by the apparent thoughtlessness of it. I'm not JapaNESE either, but who doesn't know the really offensive racial epithets? I don't mean to flame him/her, just point out something that sould be all too obvious. Larry F

Ok, Granted, the person may have just used the term to shorten the wording for the post, but all it would have taken is a Period at the end of his abbreviation and I would have taken it as that. I am half Japanese, and was called that by mean and racist people during my child-hood and seeing it here, DID offend me. I apologize if I jumped to conclusions on this, and please excuse my language earlier, but even if you live somewhere, other than the USA, you should know better. Genny

I IM ed zimmern80. zimmern80 got the URLs early in the game so may not be back soon. zimmern80 has a good command of English and I believe every English Speaking Country used similar terminology. There are only two ways the post can be taken hence my earlier comment. Either way, an apology for ignorance or stupidity is in order. Let's hope it was ignorance with a period after Jap.

It's amazing where offensive racial epitaths sneak in. That horrible "binch" poem, supposedly by a children's author, is making the rounds of the internet, including Renderoisty. "Bin" or "ben" is "son of" and is so common in Arabic names that it's the equivelant of the "ski" in my Polish name, or the "Mac" in an Irish one. We Poles will usually tolerate someone calling us "Ski", but watch what happens if you call an Irishman an "Mic". Now picture one school kid calling an Arabic classmate "binch" or a "bin", like its a derogatory thing. "Teach your children well..." Ciao! Joseph S. Wisniewski

Genny-- Don't apologize. There are any number of ways the wording of the subject header could've been changed to avoid the use of the "J" word, and I would think just about any reasonably competent english speaker would know it's an offensive epithet (not epitaph; that's what's on a gravestone). The people who ought to apologize are zimmern80 and those who seem to be defending him. Sure, different cultures have different levels of tolerance for certain kinds of racism, but that doesn't mean we ought to tolerate it here.

Farang? Is anyone offended b that? It is a term used in Thailand for a foreigner, I understand the word to translate as "less then human" or "less then Thai", I still love it there and would go back in a minute, even as a "Farang" We act sometimes (I am as guilty as anyone) as if all of the net is in the United States, or should be, we apply American standards of offense or otherwise on posts from all over the world, is this right? Or self righteous? It is intent, did this person intend to offend, I didn't think so, of course I'm a Farang now aren't I?
mr_sanity posted Mon, 24 September 2001 at 1:40 PM
Actually, farang is not a perjorative term. It's a descriptive term. It essentially means white/European person. I've talked to many Thais about it, and they all state that there's no insult intended with the word, it's simply a convenient descriptive term. In Thailand, farang is no more insulting than the word "Thai" or "American" it's simply a way to succinctly describe a person's national or ethnic background. There are plenty of other words that could be used if they wanted to be insutling. mr_sanity

Whoops! With thoughts to the "International" thread in C&D, perhaps we have gotten a tad hasty & presumptuous ourselves. It was very gracious of you to return and explain.
