Kozaburo's is the best there is for free (or not free for that matter - (no offense JB)) Was there a particular style you were looking for perhaps? ...and has anyone mentioned the "hair-on-a-square" technique recently?

That was the technique with the "Cosmo Virtual Makeover" hair images originally described by Paul Hafeli as "2-and-a-half-D". Simply uses photorealistic texture and trans maps applied to a square prop parented to the head. Looks really good but can only be viewed from straight-on. If you use a magnet to bow the square you can get a little off-angle wiggle room.
