Okay, so this isn't really related, but I'm curiuos... did anyone else ever use a cardboard box to go sledding on, or were we just ghetto-rats when I was little? We never had a real sled, we used cardboard boxes to go sledding with, but it worked, and it was just as much fun... :)
pokeydots posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 6:35 PM
heck we used anything we could get! Cardboard, plastic, sometimes we just went sliding on the snow with our coats!

I used to use a cardboard box too :) Soap up the bottom, and you could beat a sled ;) -Trav
Marque posted Thu, 18 October 2001 at 7:27 PM
I did too, but the wildest ride I ever had was a simple small round hubcap....whooooohooooo....can we talk about being out of control? lol Wonder I didn't kill myself but was it ever fun. Marque

Oh, my...wonderful sleds, but those poor lil ones need some mittens. I LOVE their outfits, too.

We used to use cardboard boxes to sled in the summer. Got Fridge boxes from the freight depot round the corner, open them up, peg them down covering a hillside with the upper ones overlapping the lower, & then sled on grocery bags! (the fish shop had great waxed bags)LOL The cardboard didn't last long enough in the snow in my neighborhood, so we used hubcaps, too! Thanks again for the memories, Sharon & Mike! - and an especial thanks for the inkwell schooldesk! You're the greatest!

Does using cardboard on grassy hills count.. ?? I don't 'sniff' get 'sniff' snow... And I feel like a fool singing 'Jingle Bells' while it is sweltering outside.. LOL

Thank you all for you good words, and a walk down memory lane. Those sure were good times. I did have a sled, but like I said, Mike said he did not, he used what you all used and ElectricAardvark you did a wonderful job on your model, LOL, and yes they do need mittens. Anyone know where we can get some? Sharen
chohole posted Fri, 19 October 2001 at 12:54 PM
Oh Sharen, they are just great. And like Helen we don't really get snow, just some 'orrible damp mushy stuff which you can't do much with, most winters. But when we did get decent snow we used mum's teatray. She wasn't happy.

LOL....teatray, oh my, I bet she wasn't happy.....silly girl....you know one of my grandmother's was from England, not really sure where, but she was always telling me to drink my tea, and she had a teatray, so I know what you are talking about. My other grandmother and grandfather were Mohawk Indians from Montreal Cananda, what a combination I turned out to be. Teatrays and teepee's. LOL.... Sharen

OK, I'll bit: I'm from Southern California, what is this "s n o w" stuff anyway?? And why is everyone coloring their hills White and sometimes Green? Don't you all know mountains are Brown and all covered with 2 to 3 foot sagebrush plants? My father once told me a story when I was 4years old and coloring a picture of our house. He said he noticed I was coloring the sky Grey, he told me the "Son, the sky is blue" but I responded "No, daddy, it's grey!" Well, he took me outside and we looked up and he said ".....by-golly son, your right, the sky Is Grey!" (silly ol' man from Kansas!!!)

The ground is already white here. We use car innertubes. Cardboard tears up too fast when it gets really cold (-20F or so) and nothing is worse than flying down a hill on a frozen piece of inflated rubber when it pops on a piece of ice!!!
SAMS3D posted Fri, 19 October 2001 at 7:15 PM
Already white, oh my, we won't get the white stuff till around end of November, is all stays about the same.....and ouch on the ice...LOL

I still remember sledding down a ski mountain at night... unauthorized. now theres an trip for ya. From the base wed scramble about 250 yards up the trail in the dark (avoiding the ski patrol :), then race down using whatever we had. Something to keep in the back of your mind: when you are on skis, a green dot/easy trail looks fairly flat. Sure, theres an incline, but its negligable. But when you push off on your sled, you realize that the "flat" trail doesnt seem so flat anymore. And oh yes, another good factoid to remember; going into a complete spin at 20-or-so mph on a snowsaucer is not an ideal situation. Especially when the stairs leading down into the base lodge is coming up on you in 3...2...1... Yeah, like I speak not from experience, right? Not me... ;)

When I worked at Glacier National Park, it snowed 6 inches one day in August...a few of us snuck into the kitchens that night, "borrowed" the huge pizza pans and cookie sheets and some crisco...and spent most of the night flying down the hills behind the lodge (E. Glacier Lodge). We entertained a few of the guests with snow football too :). thanks for bringing back those fun memories :)

We used to go out into the country in Iowa to one of Iowa's few hills and sled down cow pastures. There would usually be barbed wire. But, you learn not to pee on electric fences young.
