Okay, we are now totally confused about our web site!! We are now back on Critical Depth again, but have not heard a word one from them about this! Does any one else have this happening to them???? We still want Viomar to move our site as we no longer trust them and I know that Viomar has been very busy, so has not had a chance to move us yet to A1 Host, except for our downloads.RimRunner posted Sun, 21 October 2001 at 2:11 PM
The best way to avoid this type of thing is to get a actual domain and host it with a reputable company. I know that there are fees with this, trust me I know all too well, but it's still worth it, because you have total control over it at that point. Yes, you still have to find a host that is trust worthy. I know a few if you need ideas. :) Anyway, I did a couple whois runs and found a few addresses that would work for you that are NOT taken yet. :) So there is hope out there for total freedom for you. :) Also.. if you do register.. give TUCOWS a shot, they're cheaper than Network Solutions, but then again, they offer less in the way of services. But.. do you really need those services? :) Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions or would like more info. Not sure how savvy you are about the whole thing. I know you ladies are awesome artists, and would love to see you eliminate this as a concern for your works. :) - James

Thank You, but we already have a domain name, as we are dreamspinner3d.com at A1 Host and have our downloads there and want very much to get our friend Viomar to move the entire web site for us as we are totally web challenged. Their fee is small and they are very reputable as they have 3D Commune. We just wondered if any one else has had this happen to them who had been with Critical Depth. Thanks again James for the info. I am currently working for a hosting company and will be announcing very shortly some sprecial rates for members of Renderosity. I have already sought the permission of Tim and will be finalising the rates and services very soon. At the moment it looks like the hosting costs will be up to $20 (Australian) per month for about 50-80MB of space with no bandwidth limitations. THis means about $10 (US) per month. Like I said I will be making this official very soon.

Ugggh! I remember when hosting was free. I'd love to start a non-profit hosting company. But I don't think that would fly. ScottA

We offered hosting specials at 3-D Arena for 3-D Artists as well, $12.00 a month for 300mb of space and 8000 mb of transfer limits (we use it at 3-D Arena and have not yet gone over). We still offer it, but haven't added it to our new layout at The Scrolls. However that isn't what Dreamspinner is asking about. It appears as if your index page is missing, have you tried to get into any other page by typing the full page url?

I'm not sure why the server for Critical Depth is still working. We were all sent an e-mail that the server had mechanical problems, the worst being that the ftp part wouldn't work at all and so the server was going to be pulled on Sept. 20th. I assummed it had been, and since situations in real life are very pressing now, we figured that when things calmed down, we could get our friend Viomar to move the rest of our site to A1host. Verdie happened to click on a link to our site at 3DCommune and lo and behold the site was still there and still receiving hits. Not gonna complain too much because at least people can still have access to seeing our galleries and such. But I've repeatedly now tried the ftp and it still isn't operational so I can'd download our site to my computer to back it up. I have an older copy of our site which Viomar sent us but there's been three updates that I remember since that copy was made. It appears that the only way I can get at my site is to manually download pages and graphics through my browser. Uuurgh, if I get the time, that's what I'll do. We both just think it's mystifying that the server is still in operation and have heard nothing from Critical Depth. Would be nice if they got the ftp fixed and we didn't have to move at all....but maybe it's best to have the site all in one place. Liz Pope Dreamspinner Inc.
