Anybody have any idea on how to do the wake of a boat on water? I'm scratching my brain without too much success.

I've thought of a texture, a "wake object", and some sort of behaviour. Unfortunately I'm new at 3D and Carrara so skills need developemnt.

Does anyone know of a site with a water tutorial?

Be grateful for any ideas.

Hi Rfornasari and welcome to the 3D world, Actually, i've made a tutorial about shading a calm sea in Carrara with the Water:Waves function . It's on my site, on the link attached . It's available in english and in french . For the wake, i think there's a way to add a rectangular layer on the water, with a custom-made texture with the wake waves on it . Mix the layer with the bump of the water and move the layer as you animate the boat . Not sure what would be the best way to mix the layer, though ... I'll make some tries . If you want some foam, then you can add an extra object with an animated shader . Tough one, kinda challenging :) I'll make some tries and come back if i end with something interresting . litst

I think i got something there ... I'll post the shader tree .

See how i've done this ? First i've added a rectangular layer to the original bump channel . Then i've put my (bad!) wake texture in the layer . And that's it ! With this technique, you can animate the wake by putting a movie instead of the texture, and make the wake follow your boat by changing the layer's coordinates . Just a tip : you won't be able to add the layer to the bump channel directly from the menus . So first, add a parametric mapping and add the layer to it . Then if you want, drag the layer on top of the parametric mapping . Carrara will tell you that you can't put the layer here, but if you force the drop, it should work okay anyway . That's just a way to do it, there are surely others, but i hope it will help you and give you some ideas ! litst

Thanks litst! The water tutorial and your solution are very impressive! Not sure I understand the ins and outs of your explanation but I'll get there by playing around with it. Thanks again.

Litst, sorry, I can not get a download from that link either. Are you the Litst with that old Carrara making a body/head tutes---which EVERYONE still needs to learn from?

Adding the DCG Terrain Tool to you idea could be good also.

litst's site is no longer active. he was working for one of the prior owners of ray dream/carrara, possibly metacreations.
