i have the problem, that the textures of an imported 3ds files never look the same as in 3dmax is it possible to get the same results as in 3dmax?

Yes it is completely possible. The easiest way I have ever found is convert the mesh complete with textures to True Space Cob format then import the mesh. You will still have to tweek them a bit but it just soooo much simpler. There maybe other ways but I find that there is just so many different kinds of 3ds files around that it's best to convert the mesh to somthing else. Vue can't seem to figure out what kind of 3ds file it is. Then the textures or even the mesh gets goofed up. Vue will import 3ds files correctly though but it's a roll of the dice. You never know what to expect. How to convert them? 3d explorer will convert them but there is probibly other programs out there too. or if your lucky you own True Space. At least they have a trial one... http://www.us.righthemisphere.com/products/3dexplore/index.htm

I usually export from Max in OBJ, place the OBJ in the same directory as the textures, then import into Vue. All the textures slip right into place as they should. :)

Yeah, 3D Exploration...the end-all, cure-all. :) Vue always gives an error message on models that were converted to 3DS by 3D Exploration: It says something to the effect that the .3DS file version is obsolete, and textures may not show correctly. shrug But it seems to work fine anyway. The big problem with the 3DS format though is that objects with more than 65,000 faces simply can't be done. it's a throwback to Max' earlier DOS days, I think, similar to the 8 character limit on texture names. OBJ is still the best bet, really, though OBJ has that annoying habit of not being able to deal with transparencies....
