Does anyone know why PFO lost the support of DAZ for their Freestuff section? I was told when I inquired about what happened to it, that for some reason, I wasn't informed about why, some people told DAZ they'd be boycotted if they didn't withdraw their(DAZ) support for Funstuff. Apparently without the support of DAZ, they don't have enough bandwith any longer for the Funstuff freebies. I don't know what terrible deed would deserve such treatment. When the sources for good quality, free stuff seem to be diminishing almost daily, this didn't punish PFO for whatever, it's punished all the people who need and look for the freebies as a way to expand their Poser universe. It's also cut off another avenue for the Poser artists to show their abilities and talents, and help the community in general. I'm not sure what was gained by this, except for some momentary satisfaction by a few, to the detriment of many. Once again, I don't know the details, but if I am mis-speaking without knowing the facts, I apologize. I still can't see how a few can gain by causing a loss to many. In this season of good will and celebration, maybe a little forgiveness is in order. Now I'll get off my soapbox.

I think i'd just put that down to rumour and not try and work out why it closed without asking Grey, Willow or DAZ...if they won't say then its just rumour and not to be taken seriuos......Steve

Here is a link to some background on the matter. You can read it and form your own opinion. Here's mine; basically it was old, bad blood, and a very unhappy situation for everyone that was concerned. -nemoronknights posted Wed, 12 December 2001 at 4:20 PM
I skimmed through that thread briefly, and there is no way I'm going to spend that amount of time reading 3-month-old messages. It appears someone wrote an eloquent message about the New York tragedy, and someone got mad at him. That's absurd. But that was 3 months ago. That should have nothing to do with now.

Interesting thread that was linked to. Looks like their regime is on the same timetable as the Taliban? I've been there.. Spooky! The membership there seemed to condone their absurd behavior? Reminds me of that 'Twilight Zone' segment about the kid with all the horrible powers. "It was real good that you done that Timmy!"

This goes way back before 9/11. They had long history of banning people from their site for merely mentioning the name of Renderosity. There had been a huge blow-up between websites and the members. Too ugly to go into detail. All in all, Ian and Willow were very set in their own opinions and it rankled a lot of fur on all sides. The 9/11 incident was just the straw the broke the camel's back. It's too bad, because they had once been the best site on the web, and one of the originals for Poser. I guess the bad feelings just never healed. Unfortunately, the folks at PFO were not willing to forgive and forget. Melanie

I'm new enough that I never knew much about PFO. I did spend some time associated with another Poser-related site and group. Unfortunately, over a period of time I came to realize it was not a community I wanted to be associated with. We all have our own quirks, or shortcomings to handle, and sometimes we get ourselves into trouble. If we're with true friends, we can work through our differences or quarrels. I've seen that happen here at Renderosity, but unfortunately my experiences elsewhere were far from good. Now it's time just to forget those places that don't work, and stick with the people that work for us. Renderosity is my home now. I will visit other places for what they offer, but my home base will be here. Thanks, everyone, for making Renderosity a great community.

The PFO has always been a silly site run by pendantic egotists. It's never been much of a resource--and goodness knows--much of a braintrust either. The only thing it seems to be able to do competently is quietly self-destruct. It's been doing that for years...

I'd been on PFO every so often, but I've always gravitated back here, for many reasons, topmost among them that people here are helpful, open-minded, and interested. And polite. I have very little patience for people who have none of ther own!

" The PFO has always been a silly site run by pendantic egotists. It's never been much of a resource--and goodness knows--much of a braintrust either." At one time the PFO was the premier and only resource for Poser enthusiasts. It's because of the PFO that Renderosity exists. I don't agree with their actions, but I think it's important to remember what Willow and Grey have contributed to the making of the community (including Renderosity.) -nemo

Their past contributions can be overshadowed by any problems they created since the beginning. That's their responsibility.
fauve posted Wed, 12 December 2001 at 9:19 PM
I don't think you have any personal knowledge of either their contributions or the problems that arose, Ronknights.

Done deal... :-> Six years ago there was no Renderosity, or PFO for that matter... just a mailing list run by Steve Cooper for the users of Poser 1. I sometimes wonder if we weren't happier then. But then I think of all the very cool people I would never have had a chance to meet if things had just stayed as they were, and I'm glad everything turned out as it did. I'll count you as one of those cool people, Ron. This is a very sad, and still a very sore, subject for a lot of the community. It would probably be best to let it drop. -nemo

Why can't we all just get neked & love eachother?

Nemo, Thanks for the compliment. I am in a strange situation here. I first got Poser 1 in 1996. I still have the original 3 floppies and manual, out of sentimentality. I could never figure out Poser, even though I'd try mightily every few months. Then sometime this year, I found Poser 4, and the Curious Labs site, and followed a whole trail of links. I made many friends along the way, before finally feeling "at home" here in Renderosity. Maybe things would have been different all these years if I were on the Internet back then, or if the Internet was "more accessible" back then. But the fact remains that Renderosity, and many fine friends I made were instrumental in transforming me from a frustrated owner of a fine product to a struggling artist. Thanks again.

Frankly as far as the comment "no one gained" I don't think anyone lost anything either when the pfo closed. I know that when I lost my password there I received no responce at first and then when I did , they told me I wouldn't need it (in a rude manner) as the freestuff was gone. I asked why and there was no response... Since I was removing my free stuff anyhow due to the tyrannical nature of the moderators I could care less.

heyas; well, the pfo freestuff was shut down several months ago, too. so you can't say it was shut down for 'old' reasons. i dunno... if you only just noticed it now... you can't really say you depended on it a lot. :: but there were lots of good things there, and it is a shame if some of the people who posted there do not wish to post at other free stuff areas. you can look in the pfo community board for links to everyone's download page.

I rarely go anywhere besides Renderosity for free stuff. When I do, I see a lot of duplication at the other sites. And some of the other sites are harder to navigate, or they force you to register before you even know what they have. So I'll stay here.
