Attached Link: "Art Forum" thread

A discussion has cropped up discussing the need [or at least the want] for a dedicated forum for discussions of art techniques independant of application: color, contrast, perspective, composition, balance, flow and all of the other things that go into making an image "work" independant of the medium in which it was done. We even have a member that's indicated they might be willing to moderate it or help moderate it. Is anyone else interested in such a forum?

Absolutely yes! I think it would be very beneficial for many folks who really do want to step beyond "pretty pictures" and put some informed thought into the images they're making. The monthly Theme and Discussion in 2D Graphics is a very small attempt at this kind of thing, but it wouldn't be appropriate to turn the entire forum over to it, nor could I keep up with that kind of goal. So I'd very much like to see such a forum added and developed. d:)

Me. :) I would think about calling it "art discussion" rather than "techniques", as that word has the ability to conjure up everyone who thinks we'll be posting tutorials on how to use the texturizer in Photoshop. I think this particular kind of forum would be able to transcend any Poser vs. Cinema 4d thing, as any image creator would (or should) be interested in this kind of discussion.

I for one would love thisa to happen as i think this site lacks a place to talk about colour ,light and composition. And think it would be greatly used as a lot of artist like my self love talking about art and the technics of making an image cheers dolly

Dolly's suggestion is close to what I would pick.. something like:

Art Form & Technique

A forum for the discussion of the substance, forms, and techniques of digital art.

"Now, what should the name be? And what about the under-forum description to let the members know what should be discussed in this new forum?" How about the "Artists' Development" forum- A forum for anyone interested in learning, sharing, and developing the primary foundations for quality art creation." It would be nice for the focus to be on the artist and their skills, as opposed to a specific program. Most books, classes, and groups nowadays seem to focus on the functionality of the program as opposed to the skill of the user. What are the thigns that set two people apart, when they have the same education and experience in the same apps? Why are some people "gifted"? What is "having the eye"? How do you learn it? There are so many common elements that can be focused on- composition, lighting, color, shading, appropriateness to task, theme and message... on and on. "Art" is highly interpreable- but there is nothing wrong with knowing the "foundation" skills that set the competent artist apart from the less practiced.

I totally agree with Micheleh. You can go to 987 tip and tutorials sites, own the entire Daz and Renderosity inventory, have all the big 3D programs, and still struggle with getting your vision across. =)

Thanks, Kieraw! Another thought I had- it wouldn't hurt to touch on some of the "professional" basics, as well. How can I make a gallery that works as a "showreel"? Is my banner/page/ad good, or lacking in effectiveness? How can I get the best results from my skills and talents? Professionalism has two sides- preperation and presentation. There is such a huge knowledge base here, but many of these questions aren't specifically adressed for everyone's good, because they don't often come up in the app specific forums.

I like Varian's forum description. That works. I think the name should be "Art Theory and Practice" or something descriptive though, that gets the idea across that it's for general art and design skills. There's a lot of potential for this to eventually become a "college" forum online.

Just my two cents, but I like the ideas that Varian and Ironbear just posted. I don't think that we should even limit anything to just digital art, as the 2d forum has some wonderful painters posting work there. We all could learn a bit from photographers too, I'm sure. It's about images, period, no matter what the medium.

I like Varian's idea, too! The only reason I said "Artists'" instead of "Art" development is that I wanted to emphasise the focus on the artist and their skills, as opposed to a focus on the production of art. Most of the other forums focus on a program or technique first (hence the title) and the artist as a result. Does that make sense? I sort of see it as "perceptive/ expressive/ creative" skills applicable to any media as opposed to "usage" skills. My 2c. 8)

Maybe Art Theory and Practice would work? I like Varian's description and I'd be a regular lurker, occasional poster.

I'm getting to this discussion a bit late, but I am responsible for the original post on C&D, so of course I'm a proponent of such a forum. My original intent was to talk to others that might be interested in discussing impressionistic styles in digital art. Any place I can chat about that will be fine for me. I'm not interested in render wars, my app is better than your app, nor application specific information although applications that can help with an effect would be useful. doug

and I am getting into this even later yet... I think that this is a great idea. and I like the name in #14 too and may even be a regular myself for I would love to learn more about art theory, especially in the digital format. count me in :)
