I'm not sure if this one will take off or not. I've just been wondering where we get the names that we use on our artwork, and in Renderosity. My story is simple. Over the years I've used various aliases for various reasons. My family and friends tired of this practice quickly. They said: "But Ron, we will always know you as Ron Knights!" So I decided "I want to be me!" ronknights

My alias comes from a roleplaying character I created a while ago. I patterned the character's personality and morals after my own so my friends started calling me 'Wolfe' as a joke. IT'S ALL THIER FAULT I TELL YOU!! I'M PERFECTLY SANE!! SANE I TELL YOU!!

Name: Mike

You beat me to the punch on this one Ron. I had the same question rattling around my head too.

Kelderek posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 7:16 AM

The name Kelderek comes from the lead character in the Richard Adams novel "Shardik". I have no really good explanation to why I picked it, I think it was when I registered my first Hotmail account long ago and just needed a nick name. It has stuck since then and I have continued using it when I entered into the 3D arena.

i lived in foster homes most of my childhood. well, there was this one doll a foster family gave me and her name was "cinnamon" she had this beautiful red hair and if u pushed her belly in...it would make her hair shorter. to make it longer, you just pulled her pony tail. she had freckles and she was so cute. i was really attached to this doll for some reason (as i was to a stuffed bear named "buffy") cinnamon and buffy had to come with me everywhere i went. it was a way i (as a child) delt with some of the emotional stuff of being abandoned. i still have buffy, but cinnamon was lost:-( i will never forget that doll and the comfort she brought me. so, in memory of her...meet cinnamon stix (me) ummm...i have a picture of buffy if anybody wants to see da' cutie??!! real name: Elizabeth

Thank you very much, cinnamon, and the rest of you for such informative and moving stories. Cinnamon, feel free to post any pictures you like. I hope you know we're all friends and family here. I just thought it would be nice to know the story behind the name. How about another idea? Feel free to post a picture of yourself. It can be a self portrait or just a snapshot. Here is my contribution. It's a collage I mage with Microsoft PictureIt. This one is small because I can't find the larger one right now. This picture depicts my wonderful life, with my blushing bride, our "furry family," and computers, my "other love and passion." Ron

cwshorty posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 7:35 AM

This is a good thread, mainly because I already have the explanation on my web page, so copy and paste works very well so here we go. I've been asked on several occasions what does Cwshorty stand for, well to make a long story short, as a child I had a tendency to be alittle rough with my toys, or maybe I should say destructive. At the same time there was a popular wrecking company which was named the Cleveland Wrecking Co. - which is still in existence today - so my Uncle started calling me Cleveland Wrecking Shorty. Thus the name Cwshorty. I hope you didn't hit your head on the keyboard while you dozed off during that little story. However, I'm known by most people as Linda. BTW Cinnamon, I remember that doll you are talking about my sister had one, but she would never let me play with it, I can't imagine why LOL.

ockham posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 7:52 AM

Well, I can't match the emotional resonance and depth of those stories! When I first went online with Compuserve, about 13 years ago, I mainly frequented political and religious forums. I quickly realized that most of what I posted was sort of off-message and unwanted by the inevitable "teams" that develop on such forums. No matter the subject, from computers to religion to sex, there are always two teams in a forum; if you agree with team A, you'll get cheers from A and friendly jeers from B. (And vice versa) But if you question the basic assumptions of both teams, as I always found myself doing, you'll be ignored or strongly dismissed. So I started calling myself Ockham: not the most common spelling of the name, but more likely to be unique online.

Zwaan being my last name and Dutch for Swan and people calling me Johnnie instead of John (I'm 1.87 cm :-) and is really the name my parents gave me, Johnnie that is) made me decide to pick the nick Swannie. Also I'm crazy about Swans. I think they are the most beautiful (water)birds/creatures there are. Although I hated that name when I was young.. they called me Ugly Duckling and all that, but that duckling turned out ot be a gorgeous swan haughty Hehehe, just kidding! Nowadays I make my kids proud of that last name, cos in fact it is a great last name. Being proud of it makes the difference.. they are not being teased with it. So, that's my short story... nice thread! Johnnie...

melanie posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 8:06 AM

I couldn't think of anything clever, so I just stuck with Melanie, the name my parents gave me. My dad had never heard the name and read it in the birth announcements before I was born, but he pronounced it wrong (he thought it was M-lay-nie), but my mother, being a Gone With The Wind fan, quickly corrected him and somehow I ended up with the name. Friends call me Mel and family call me Lanie, but I just ended up with Melanie on all my membership and log-in names. I wish I had a more dramatic or interesting story. Melanie

eirian posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 9:14 AM

Eirian is a character in one of my favourite novels: Freda Warrington's "Dark Cathedral". I picked out the name for two things. While it's not a "pagan" name, that novel gives it a pagan resonance for me, and that was important to me. I needed an alias that would reflect my religion, if only in my own heart. And it's a Welsh name (translation = silver), and I live in Wales.

four years ago I got my first doggie ever, a Siberian Husky, because of her clear blue mysterious eyes, I named her Mystic, being she's a winter doggie, I called her Winter, then my husband pointed out to me that I had to choose a name, so I ended up with MysticWinter, before the ink was dry on her papers, I was signing in as MysticWinter all over the net, most just call me Mystic :o) I use MysticWinter as my only Identity, before that I used the name Whisper for a good 7 years, which some people still call me (some people can't handle change) that name was given to me because I tend to speak in a whisper.

Daio posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 9:50 AM

Daio (Day-oh) is a nickname I made up when I was 17 and went off to college because I hated my real name. Okay, so I don't mind Donna Maria even if it is a very Spanish name for someone of German descent, but I hate just Donna itself. I have never felt like a Donna. So when I left home for college I simply told everyone I met there that it was my nickname. Now just about everyone I know socially (friends and family) call me that, the only ones who call me by my given name are the folks at work (and my mother when she's peeved at me). I did not find out until recently that Daio is an actual name in Japanese and the it is a Man's name. I does lead to some confusion at times but I'm not changing it. :-)

ronknights posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:08 AM

Wow, again, thanks for all the replies, histories, etc. Let's not worry about whether the story behind our "identities" is boring. After all mine is really just my name! Someone asked about other identities. I have used a few over the years, but I only use maybe 2-3 right now. Sometimes I use marlinfingle or Marlin Fingle, who is my comic strip character. He may actually see "life" one day. I've adopted a new identity for Renderotica because my art there is more graphic, without being pornographic. (Anyone who wants to know that identity can try sending me an IM.) nikitacreed talked about using a character from her book. I have a book I've been writing for about 20 years. It's called "Machines That Madden." Part of the concept is that the main character has a story to tell which could help save the world. He knows that telling the story will put him and his loved ones in jeapordy. Unfortunately for our hero, some dark force keeps invading his mind, and often succeeds in keeping the Truth just out of his grasp. Our main character has a habit of slipping into and out of different realities and identities. I've shared the story with some friends, and they found it gripping. I just get lost in telling stories in "novel form." So the story remains unfinished. Ron

My wife's initials are ip, mine are th, hence the "thip". Would've been more gentleman-like if I had put my wife's initials first, but have you ever tried to pronounce "ipth" ? Someone sent me an IM once, in which I was asked if I had any connections with the canadian rock group Tragically Hip. Just for the record - I don't. My singing would be classed as a crime against humanity ;-)

White Raven posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:14 AM

Well, my story is a little complicated - I started out with the nickname Zani (short for Androzani, from "Doctor Who and the Caves of Androzani", and I still am) in late 1986 or so, but when I got my first "real" online account I named myself after a characteristic I've always had - being a black sheep, or in this case, a White Raven. :) I also always loved that Raven was a little bit sneaky and a lot more wise in all the stories I knew, so White Raven is the name I use. :) Hope I didn't send you to sleep, White Raven

Crescent posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:16 AM

I'm a night person and somewhat neo-pagan. (I appreciate the philosophy, but I'm not religious.) I like having a name that implies that I'm always getting better (a crescent moon becomes a full moon) and if I have an off day (crescent waning) then it's just a matter of time before things come around and I start getting brighter again. (Atleast, that's the hope.) I've used this name for many years. I actually get offended if I have to modify my name because someone else is already using it. (Has stolen it.)

Penguinisto posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:38 AM

When it comes to computers, Unix is and was my first choice - Windows was an afterthought for me (my very first home PC ran SCO Unix, not DOS.) Since most folks in and around the Quake2 Weapons Factory MOD forums knew about this little *ix fetish of mine (especially WRT Linux), I had gotten the name "Penguinisto" to replace my old moniker "Spark" (short for 'spark-chaser' - a common slang term for electronic engineers like I had once been :) So why not "Tux" or something like that? Well, it's like this: Even today, a true linux afficianado usually refers to him- or herself as a "Penguinista" ( a munge-up of the term "Zapatista" that certain Latin revolutionaries took on for themselves in semi-recent history...) However, looking at the Spanish way of names (names ending in "..a" are feminine, while those ending in "..o" are masculine), I figured the term "Penguinista" is a bit too feminine-sounding for my taste, especially when I was toting around a rocket launcher :) (For those who may not know, Linux' mascot is a Penguin... he's a cute little critter too, according to the missus.) So to make a long story short, the WF community pretty much decided that I would be better off with my current nickname, and it just sort of stuck. Most folks there just call me "Peng" for short; it saves keystrokes. My real name: Thos. J Miller jr. /P

Lemurtek posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:39 AM

This is my story, and I'm sticking to it! Well, a long time ago, I was hanging out with my lemur friends in the jungle. Most Lemurs are pretty easy going, you know, lie around, eat, dance, leap, browsing the Lemur forums, etc. But I was always a little different, I like to invent and build things. Sadly, none of which actually worked that well, but it's really hard to get the right tools when you're a Lemur. Eventually, the other Lemurs began calling me the Lemur who does Technology. Actually, they began calling me the Lemur who does Technology Badly, but that's not really relevant. Anyway, this went on for awhile, when one night a strange object came crashng down in the jungle. At first every body was paniking, after all we remember a big scary thing crashing down, back when we lived with the folk you now call Dinosaurs. That was terrible, so of course every body was worried and the Lemur forums were buzzing. After awhile, when nothing bad happened, most everybody forgot about it and went back to business as usual (not that Lemurs care much for business, and as an aside, did you know there are no Lemur Lawyers?) Anyway, I, having more than my share of curiosity, couldn't rest until I discovered the source of this unsolved mystery. So I packed up my Lemur mystery solving kit (which consisted of a rock and a stick... hey told ya, hard to get good tools!) and took off. After many adventures (which I will not go into here, due to space concerns) I came across the object, hidden deep in the jungle... It was a Extra Terrestrial Space ship! After careful consideration, I began to investigate the ship, so as to ascertain it's properties. Stage one involved poking said ship with my stick. When this technique, inventive though it may be, failed to yield satisfactory results, I was forced to used more invasive measures. I banged on the ship with my rock. This produced a much more interesting data set, in the form of a loud bonging noise. After repeating this technique for some while, (after all experimental results are useless unless they are repeatable) I sat down to think. It was at this point I had the brilliant Idea of muttering to myself, "how can I get inside" Some of my Lemur compatriots have opined that as I am always muttering to myself, this idea was less brilliant than sheer luck. I think they're just jealous. Meanwhile, the ship itself spoke to me! It turns out it was controlled via voice! Wonderful. Well, I won't bore you all with my long conversations with the ship, but eventually I learned how to control and operate the ship, as well as many other aspects of the ship. And since the ship was well stocked with both genetic materials from Earth and other planets and much information about biotechnogy, it was then that I conceived of the ambition to work with the stuff of life itself, to create new forms of life. As I was a fast learner, this kind of technology soon became second nature to me. After many moons of plotting and planning, I gathered a small cadre of my more adventurous lemur comrades, and headed off to make my new Laboratory, which I planned to build on an asteroid, since Earth is so darned crowded. Before we left, the ship required us to apply for interstellar passports. Well, in the name section, I of course put Lemur who does Technology. There was a unerving 'Bzzzzzt' sound, and I was informed that my name was too long for the instellar space traveler registration computer to accept. Hmmmm. You'd think an alien race who built things with names like 'instellar space traveler registration computer' would be a little more generous in the name length department but oh well. I shortened my name to Lemur Technology, (Bzzt, too long) and then Lemurtech (Bzzt too long) and finally Lemurtek. Bing! So there you have it. Regards- Lemur who does Technology (badly)

Scarab posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 10:46 AM

I suspect my nickname goes back further than most. I was introduced to the vector-graphic "Plato" computer system based in Urbana, Illinois in 1975. Plato was spread out among various institutions of higher learning and comprised one of the very early but recognizable arms of what would eventually become the internet as we know it (and Al Gore was nowhere around). Anyway, I was not and still am not a computer whiz, but I was attracted to the interactive games and messaging. You would have to see vector graphic "3D Startrek" to believe how primitive this was....one step above "Pong" but you could play with people across the continental US. ANYWAY....I discovered that Plato had a slight flaw in that there was a way that you could overwrite letters without erasing them and create new symbols. I combined "8,Y,+, and X" and got a symbol that looked like an egyptian Scarab beetle. This became my marker and nickname from that day on. Scarab (wish there was a way to do that little symbol here)

duanemoody posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 11:34 AM

I wrote an X-files fanfic several years back and on the advice of the alt.xfiles.creative FAQ decided not to post it under my real name. Having come off a clinical depression I thought "Moody" would be ironic, and it has that intensely bland Christian connotation with the Moody Institute (remember, Ian Fleming picked James Bond's name specifically for its dullness). Duane just sort of popped into my head; my wife's first roommate in college had an obnoxious live-in boyfriend for the first semester named Duane (who wasn't a student there -- longish story). I figured a moniker this boring would keep my ego in check and keep people from asking (so far, it's worked). Stu Charno, the fellow who played the wacky serial killer in the X-files episode "The Long Repose of Clyde Bruckman" uses one name for his acting career, another for his musical career, and I believe a third for some other artistic pursuit of his. My other web pursuits are similarly divided among different identities.

This is a fun thread! Thank you, everybody, for sharing. Oddly, when i signed onto Renderosity, i specifically did not pick a nickname for professional reasons... i do a bit of illustration here and there, freelance, so i just kept it close to Nan Fredman. Yeah, normal. Which is the REAL disguise for me! Hah! Me normal? (More weirdness: Fredman is a Swedish name, and i look about as Swedish as... well, Frodo Baggins.) For years i have really been red_sonja online--since the time that e-mail was a special thing that only companies on ARPANET had. i felt a kinship to Howard's female Slavic freedom-fighter, in spirit if not in appearance--and probably because i look nothing like Brigit Nielsen! You will probably all think I am weird but... 1996 was a tough year, ugly divorce and lost my job (Artist/teacher/director of an intergenerational arts program). I had 4 kids under to feed and no money for things like car insurance, gas, etc. so job opportunities were tough. Now we go weird... I have always been interested in the occult, spirituality (used to play church), etc. and learned how to read runes. Well, my little town opened a New age store and I checked it out and the next thing I knew I became a reader. Made enough money for us to get by on till I found a "real" job in a ladies dresss shop. ( the readings were more fun but putting entertainer on my 1040 was too weird). In the begining it was slow so we all got very close and nicknames started. I am Barbara, I became Barbarella but more in a Cinderella way cause I was always cleaning. (the other name they tried to start was Babzilla but I put a stop to that.) Any way, our first online account came through one of my daughters around that time and she had power of the screen names, she put me in as Barbarella, when she discovered there were others she added the ny for NY. It stuck. My Hotmail account is Alulubelle.( what my mom always told me I was) The picture is one of my first poser attempts. Looks like me enough and is what I send to all those pesky people who want my photo online. lol

senjin posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 1:01 PM

It would seem that great minds do think alike. Well the name " Senjin" came from my favorite author: Eric Van Lusterbader. When I was in the army and in the hospital. I had nothing to do but read.( it's hard to do anything else when you are in traction for 124 days. ) Well he created this character that was a bad guy but after reading the second book: " the Miko" you see just why the guy is bad and why he did the things that he did in the first book. " The Ninja." well i liked the character so much that when I first came on line I decided that it would be my handle and over the years many of my friends have asked why and then I would let them borrow the books to read for themseleves. Then they would come back with: " Hey Barry, that guy is so evil. You are nothing like him." I just laughed and always told them that they would have to know me better to understand why I like him so much. Over time many of them have seen that the character and I are a lot alike. I trained in Japan and think in the same way they do. But it was not till something major happened that they found out just what it was that I trained in. Now all of them understand why I chose that name. Later came Paradox and I have chosen it as my second handle, because my Sensi last words to me were that this is what I am and who I shall always be. So I guess what I am getting at is, I think we chose our handles because of the verious parts of our being or because we think the name sounds cool.LOL Anyway Ron is a good bud and seems to be in the: "Paradox" state of mind

Lisas_Botanicals posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 1:12 PM

I started out here as LwayzSmiln and there is a story behind that. This is from a page on my web site: ____________________________________ Many people ask what "LwayzSmiln" means and why I call this part of my web site "Advantages of LwayzSmiln." LwayzSmiln was a screen name I used on AOL in 1996. I was going through a very tough time in my life. I was depressed and having a rough time finding anything to smile about. I felt that my world had come to an end. One of the things that I like about myself is the ability to have always been able to find the positive - or the bright side - to any situation. However, at this point in my life I couldn't find much to smile about. As an exercise in overcoming my depression I chose to actively seek out the positives. In the process of surrounding myself with and seeking positives I chose the screen name "LwayzSmiln" which is a variation of "Always Smiling". The web site title "Advantages of LwayzSmiln", to me, simply means that in my journey for happiness in life I've encountered things that have added to me. Some of these things were quite painful and some were exhilarating beyond belief. All of these things have their place within me. These things have built character, changed views and opinions and given more 'self' to my self-worth. They have opened my eyes to things never before seen, touched my heart in places never imagined and continually shape me into who I am and who I am becoming. I call these things "Advantages". ________________________________ There came a point where I felt like "LwayzSmiln" didn't fit anymore and I decided to just be me, thus, LisaB, :) Lisa Buckalew

Talk about ironies or paradoxes. Senjin and I have been good "online buddies," for a year now I think. I don't think we ever discussed those books by Eric Van Lusterbader. I love those books. He's one of my favorite authors, after Stephen King. I never remembered the names of the characters, except one, Mariko. I can't even remember if she was a "good or bad" character. Ron

I used to be a big comics fan, especially the X-Men, so when it came time to come up with an e-mail address I wanted to use xman66 (I have a big shiny quarter for the first person who knows the significance of the number 66 in X-Men history), but that was taken, so I added 2000 to the end, that being the year I got online. So x2000 is just a shortened version of my e-mail address and I use it everywhere I go on the net. I've thought about switching to something more creative, but everybody who knows me online knows me by the name x2000, so what the hell. My real name is Mike, so nothing too original there, either...;)

shadownet posted Thu, 31 January 2002 at 1:40 PM

Interesting thread. No easy answer as I tend to be a rather complexed person - who for a multitude of reasons has always preferred to keep company with shadows. From a poem I wrote - in what now seems long ago:

Shadows sway and shadows dance, in murky murky night. Shadows that spring up to peek from corners and behind things as they play hide and seek with the light of streetlamps and insipid rays of moonlight. Shadows are as shadows will be, and are not always the things we think we see. Shadows grow and shadows fade and shadows take shapes that they are not. Shadows come and shadows go - sometimes seen but never heard. Shadows are phantoms and shadows are jesters to quail the heart and make silly the mind. And shadows' favorite playground is the dark and hazy night. And eyes not accustom to shadows' play are shadows' delight. For more than all these things, shadows are mischievous. For shadows think it fun to spin their subtile forms into grotesque and dreadful shapes to tease and frighten poor unsuspecting souls. But shadows are harmless, for shadows are not real. And though shadows can be awe inspiring at night, it is not the shadows that are truly feared. Rather, the dark things that might lurk hidden within those shadows.

Ron. The character you are talking about was in the second book. The miko and she was the wife of Senjin, althought this was not riveled till nick killed her. but you are right we have never talked about the books and i didn't know you liked his work. I have every book written by him and I mean the hard backs. I wish he was still writing, but after his wife dies I think it took the spark out of his writing. I had considered changing it legally, but with the advent of popular internet use, I figured it was safer for me to keep my less PC activities under a different name. Where did it come from? a number of places - but the first name came in a dream - it seems to be related to the welsh sea god Llyr and the phonetically the italian coinage. Madril from a shortening of madrigal, a form of music, Del (from), and Hobrice as a misspelling of Hubris. I chose to name myself for Hubris - because that is one of my largest problems to overcome. And rushing :) The first three names in rough translation come to "Gold Song of Pride" Thanks for starting this thread Ron! :) Lyrra Madril Del'Hobrice Ecklippa-Blackhart D'mer

Long ago, in the earlier days of pen & paper RPG's, came a game called Shadowrun. For those who don't know it, the setting is a dark future, where Magic has returned to Earth in force, and walks side-by-side with high technology in a Mega-corporation run society. Information was power, and those who had it, or coud get it, held control. My character was an Elven Decker...a specialist in infiltrating corporate datanets and aquiring information. Since the nature of The Matrix (coined LONG before the movie) allowed you to appear however you liked while jacked in, I chose the persona of a cybernetic metal tiger, and the name to go along with it. If you needed a Datasteal of high risk and big credits, you wanted the ChromeTiger... So of course, once I started my heavy online addiction, the name had to come with me. :-) There is at least one other ChromeTiger I know of on the 'net...but I'm the original, and I have the name registered to prove it. Mainly because I'm a royal jinx around anything green and growing (I can touch a phylidindrin and kill it) and because I broke down 5 rides in a row at my first trip to the magic kingdom of Disney World ;) Got stuck in the middle of Space Mountain for over an hour..... anyway, long story short, I've been dubbed Jinx by all my friends not in the SCA. In the SCA though I gained the name Littlefox in honor of the man I apprenticed to, Barron William Blackfox of Ansteoria. As I was always sitting at his feet and he had me tagging along behind him to meet his friends and was introduced as his little fox in training, the nickname stuck and became my sirname, Littlefox. And then I received my AOA (Award of Arms) and became Lady Littlefox. Pretty simple no? The funny part was that he always drew me as a tiger or a panther in a Kimono, but I will always be his kit. Even now that he is no longer with us and I am not much in the SCA because I miss him so much, I still keep the name to remember him by. Anyway, next! :) Jinx Littlefox

Here's the idea: Once you've posted the origin of your name, you pick someone who has posted before you, and create a neat image representing them! Here's the rules: 1. Only one choice per person. 2. Once a person has been targete...er, selected, they're off the available list. 3. You may IM your subject (within reason) to ask any questions you may need to get further background on the person. 4. You can use whatever software you're comfortable with, postwork is certainly allowed. 5. All images must be created in good spirits...no slanderous or insulting depictions allowed. 6. All images have to meet the TOS for Renderosity. 7. Images are posted in the most appropriate Gallery, with the title format being "Forum Challenge: *subject name*" (i.e. "Forum Challenge: ChromeTiger") If any of the vendors out there like the idea, and would like to provide nifty prizes, we could even get a panel of judges and make it a little contest...whaddya think, sound like fun? I'll even take the first step, and choose my victi...er, subject. And I choose.............Stormrage! I'll commence development of my image based on response to the idea. Great thread, Ron! ronknights posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 7:03 AM

Melanie, thanks for the compliment. I was thinking about these "artist's names" one day, and just wondering where they all came from. Senjin is a buddy, so he explained his alias pretty much. I learned the rest of the story a year later. Maybe one reason some of us use an alias is that it is a way of reflecting how we see ourselves. We might identify with a particular character in literature or history. I think some of us just don't want to use our own names in our artwork. Maybe we don't want our friends, relatives or co-workers to know about our art? Sometimes it is nice, or even liberating to be "annonymous" (spelling?). And sometimes it is awkward to use your real name. I had a hard time finding a design for a "web-button" that had enough room for "Ron Knights." Over the past few years I've bugged my friends and family to see all my creative pursuits. They get tired of it fast. But when they do look, they don't want to remember my current alias. They said I will always be "Ron" or "Ron Knights" to them. So I'm back to being "me." Ron

In truth, he was quite a rogue, a pirate, if you will. You can read the entire ebook online at http://www.blackmask.com/olbooks/scmshdex.htm However, Scaramouche is also the name of a four-hand, two-piano duet written by Darius Milhaud, a French-born twentieth century composer. While he was living in Argentina, he composed this three-movement piece in 1937. It is my favorite two-piano duet - so much so that a friend of mine, who is also a Julliard graduate, and I have been playing it at concerts as a showstopper finale. You must listen to it sometime - while listening to the last movement, Brazileira, you will not be able to quit tapping your foot (or some other appendage, for that matter) in time with the South American rhythms. There is a MIDI file at http://www.midiworld.com/cmc/twenty.html and search for Milhaud (it's about halfway down the page); both Windows Media Player and Apple's QuickTime Player can play MIDI files (this one is about 24KB). By day, I am employed as a public school computer science teacher; by night I teach computer courses at a local business college. On weekends, I get to log on to Renderosity.com (when I'm not playing the piano!). Kudos to you, Ron, for a most enjoyable thread!

Alright, Chrome tiger had an idea, let's run with it! I'm going to go start a challenge in the Challenge Forum, with the whole purpose being to create an image in whatever renderer you wish, of your image of another person's Renderosity Identity. The prize? Well, how about this: First prize is your choice of the Redta Riding Lizard, or the Dragonstar Company, both from my store, both priced at $20. Hey, it's not much, but this could be fun! Oh, and I need volunteers who are not going to enter, who would be willing to vote on the thread...

loftie posted Tue, 05 February 2002 at 12:58 PM

Ok my name comes from (can you believe) a beer advert. We had a beer advert a couple of years ago here in south africa where the men would sit at a bar a hit there beer glasses on the counter screaming Loftie (which were the barmans name), but he would ignore them, then a couple of cool dudes would walk into the bar and go sit at a table and point at the barman (Loftie), were upon he would wink and mention to the table were something was under a cloth. Upon revealing it, it was an icebucket full of very cold beers. Being a beerlover myself it kinda stuck to the back of my head and when I first signed onto the internet and had to think of a name nobody else uses it just popped onto the screen. I also used everywhere IRC, mail, etc. Well there is my story. PS: I sign my pictures with my real name because outside of the internet nobody knows my internet handle.

Kethram posted Wed, 06 February 2002 at 7:02 AM

I've had this story in my head for about 10 years now. The main character started with the name Vadim. But I didn't like the ring of it after a while, so he became Etarniel (Tarn for short). But that one did not quite fit the character, so I changed it again. He's been called Kethram ever since. My real name is quite unique. If I used it as a nickname, anyone who knows me would know it was me. I like the anonymity of a nickname. I've used the names Sharena and Sha'Aree but somehow those names don't fit me anymore. Some time ago I realised that Kethram from my story is a lot like myself, so I started to use Kethram as a nickname. There's just one problem with it: people get confused about my gender. Kethram may be male, but I'm am female.

llacey posted Thu, 07 February 2002 at 12:34 AM

My name came from the female in a novel I'm writing. A, clean, silly sappy love story..... they always say Lacey has already been taken so it became Llacey... there you have it.

What an intriguing thread! :) I think I'll just have to post something. I'm usually very very quiet here, but this brought me out of my shell. :) Kudos, Ron!

From the help entry for TriTeq in the online game I help create:
"The human megaconglomerate that owns most of the important industries of the known (read: game) universe. Its rival is SeetKorp, another megaconglomerate established by the Altair race."

Well, that entry was written by someone else, not me! laugh In reality, TriTeq is a combination of my spouse's and my online names. We needed a name for a corporation for an online area we were writing together back when we first met online, and we started using TriTeq as our inside joke. Well, over time and as we developed and wrote the background information for our game, we started using the name more and more (yes, we were too lazy to invent other companies!) until it turned into a megacorporation! :)

I use the name here because it has a unique presence, it's relatively androgynous, and I like the techy feel that it has. Plus, it reminds me of my spouse whom I met online almost 9 years ago, and how much of our relationship is supporting each other in our creative endeavors.
Cheers! smile

I get asked that all the time. I have used the name forever, since before prodigy or AOL on BBS internet in early 80's. I have a circle of friends who have been together for, well ages. We sort of have a club. We follow a code of Honor based on the old Templars. Each of us has specific responsability in the Order, The Knights of the Black Rose. I have always been the one to keep the law. I have to watch over the others in the "Club", make sure they follow the rules and code. When names were assigned to each position, They started calling me The Overseer as a joke and it stuck. The Knights of the Black Rose, though small, spread worldwide after some time and an Overseer is needed in each "House". Soon we started tagging the first initial of that Overseer's name on the end of the title. My name is Nick, thus, OverseerN... OK now that I have bored you all to death, my brothers and I wish you well. Until Next... N.

First ID was Alucard1 Alucard was the name I got from the 86 Horror-Spoof movie "The Monster Squad" Alucard was Count Dracula (Alucard-Dracula) My second was Halcyon Reign, that I came up when I was in like the 5th grade. In my vocab class I came across the word "halcyon" which according to the dictionary meant peacful or calm.. "Halcyon Reign" I thought would have been a cool name for a character, and so adopted it myself. Most of my other id's were variations on these Alucard## for any other Al's before me at the location, and HalcyonR if HalcyonReign was too long.. Thanks Ron for starting this thread, I've always wondered where people got their nicks, and have been asked on mulitudes of occasions where mine has come from... Many people have asked me if I'm asian over the years which I'm not. I'm kind of attached to the name, and I've never had a problem using it wherever I go. I used to hate my real name when I was younger. I like it now but it's rather plain. Dawn

BellaMorte posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 7:27 PM

Way cool thread. Thanks nu-be for bringing to the fore :) Bella Morte was the last role playing character I created prior to 1996. Even though my husband had been using the internet for years, I didn't start until 1999 (all his fault that I'm addicted to it LOL) Anyway. We were setting up for another D&D session and I just got a Gazetteer (sp?) on the Indians of the D&D world. I decided that I wanted a btchy type character so I chose the Mayan/Aztex/Incan group (got a little tired of playing sweet virtuous type females LOL). Anyway, their names are death based so my husband chose Bella Morte = Lady Death or Beautiful Death. We then got Vampire: The Masquerade and I decided to transfer into that game setting so she became a vampire. We were in the setting up stages when circumstances forced us to put rpg on the shelves. Then I got involved in the internet and I had to use something but I didn't want to use my everyday name so here I am. Mind you, I could have gotten away with using my true name as it is strange enough but I hate it because no one pronounces it correctly and that just pssed me right off so it got shortened to Kay (that is what I am known as now to all but my family). The other reason why I use Bella Morte is because she allowed me to be something that I am not. Outgoing and straight forward. In reality I am shy and reserved. Not that you can tell on the internet here LOL Sorry for the epic. I now return you to your regular scheduled programme ;)

When I signed up at Renderosity originally, I was using jevans (my first initial and last name) at most web sites; when I tried to sign up here with that name, it wouldn't let me use it; IIRC, it was already in use. My standard practice was to add a number to the end of the name and try again. As it would happen, the movie "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" was running on the TV in the living room at the time, and just as I was getting ready to re-submit my user name, they came to the line in the movie where the characters Bill & Ted both chime in with the phrase "Sixty nine, dude!" in response to being queried about their favorite number. I took it as a good sign, and thus my user ID. :)
