A "TEMPTING" TYPEFACE -- TEMPTATION FONT AVAILABLE FOR MAC AND PC

February 11, 2002 -- Given the increasing quality of 3d models available to digital artists, it only seems inevitable that someone would base an entire typeface on the bodies of posed nude females. That typeface is called Temptation and it is now available from artist Dave Hill at www.aarrgghh.com.

Using Daz3d's (www.daz3d.com) Victoria model, designed for use with Curious Labs (www.curiouslabs.com) Poser figure design and animation software, digital designer and illustrator Dave Hill has created an enticing typeface whose characters are constructed of the intertwined bodies of nude females.

The inspiration for the design dates back to a photograph from a 1950s collaboration between surrealist painter Salvador Dali and photographer Phillipe Halsman. That image was titled "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" and was last seen by the general public on the poster for the movie "The Silence of the Lambs", albeit in a disguised form -- looking closely at the markings on the moths wings, you'll see a skull constructed of the intertwined bodies of seven female nudes.

"I recreated that image back in 1997, using Poser 2," explains the artist. "More recently I took the time to revisit that image, now that the models available for Poser are far superior to the ones I had originally used." (The updated image, titled "Temptation", may be seen on his website www.aarrgghh.com.) "Since I was also preparing the image for distribution on merchandise, I needed to think about putting a title on it."

"While trying to choose an appropriate typeface, I decided that nothing would be more apt than using posed nudes," says Hill. "So I initially created the eight letters that make up the word 'Temptation', and after a week of monastic concentration I extrapolated a basic character set."

This set is now available via email (temptme@aarrgghh.com) for $35 in both Postscript and TrueType formats, for both the Macintosh and IBM-compatible PCs:

Temptation is also available on cd as three sets of 71 full-color graphic image files (font included on cd):

Set A ($149) -- Photoshop, with alpha mask, clipping path and drop shadow layer. Most versatile. Sample files from this set are now available for free download.

Set B ($129) -- TIFF, with alpha mask and clipping path. Good for QuarkXpress.

Set C ($119) -- Photoshop EPS, in CMYK color, with clipping path. Good for Illustrator.

All sets come in three resolutions: 300 dpi (about 2000 pixels high), 150 dpi (about 1000 pixels high) and 72 dpi (about 500 pixels high), for a total of 213 images.
