Well, the symbol of Christianity back in the days when they were persecuted was a fish.. maybe it's on purpose? - darkpen

maybe! now that I know what it really is, is difficult for me to see the fish shape (i really can't figure out how I wasn't able to see the true shape!)

It is really double, surely on purpose.Great photo.

Looking at it again, it kinda looks like La Pia, but with the whole top of Mary missing (you can see her feet and all).. - darkpen

Great shot, I really thought it was a fish until I scrolled down & saw the whole thing, now it looks like both.

think darkpen is right, the top of Mary and a leg of Christ are missing. the time, the weather and the missing parts, made the pic double...

JordyArt posted Fri, 01 March 2002 at 2:20 PM

Darn!!! Coz I've got a modem connection (tsk) I was able to read the comments before the pic appeared - and when it did I saw the fish for about 1/2 a second, then saw the Christ - I too now have to REALLY concentrate to see the fish, and the doctor's already warned me about thinking...... Amazing scultpure, and nicely captured, Kitty! (",)

OK I can see the Christ but to me it also looks like a FROG. I didn't think the fish symbol didn't become popular until the last century. Bsteph

This thing is so intresting you could look at it for awhile and see so many different things. I see a frog now too since bsteph outlined it. cool textures here too.

hotkitty posted Fri, 01 March 2002 at 3:46 PM

your drow make the "frog" come out of the photo; but I still think is more like a kind of prehistoric fish. don't think the artist would the statue look double; but the shot I took make it seem really interesting....

Great! I can see both Fish, frog and the Christ-like figure. All this discussion of fish-people just brings to mind Rene Magritte's wonderful images, though! Hey Jordy, you're doctor warned you about that as well? I thoughtow it was just me! There it goes again...

FYI The fish as a symbol was used by the followers of Christ, not because they were fishermen but because of the Greek word for fish,IKTHOUS, the letters of which were used to represent the phrase IESOUS KRISTOS THEOS OIOUS SOTAIR which means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior

Wow thanks for the info Caledonia. I therefore suppose that the fish was used befor this century! would make sense therefore that the fish symbol was used perhaps as far back as the early 100's. I mean when else was Latin and Greek popularly used as languages simultaneously. Bsteph

When the christians in Rome were hunted they used the fish symbol to give messages to eatch others, in the catacombes of Rome.
