Subject: Strange.........does anyone know what it is?

This is the strangest plant I have ever seen......found in a marshy area. There were a few growing on semi-moist earth and some growing right up out of the water. Are there any horticulturist in here? Keep in mind I'm in the NorthEast USA.....I'm assuming this is a native plant.
