I have made many starships with warp nacelles but so far I have been unable to create a good glow for the engines is there a good tutorial on how to make glowing textures or could someone advise me on how to get my nacelles glowing?

If you look in my "Sun Glare test" post you'll see Voyager with the nacelles glowing. If you wish to acheive that effect select the object that represents the glow and change the material to volume and 100% ambience, select what color you wish it to be. If you want it to cast light you'll have to add a light in there, it should work.

For it to work best, you also need to go into the material and turn OFF the "cast shadow, recieve shadow, and self-shadow" options in the material. Glowing things with shadows across them just do NOT look right. It's really important to do this with the material on any object that is supposed to be giving off light, such as flames, etc. In addition to the material looking more realistic, if you then stick a light source inside it, the light can radiate outward unobstructed.
