When you are in the channel palette and have the alpha channel selected press Ctrl+I. This should work.

To feel even more dumb, how do you get to the alpha channel to choose it?

In the Layers window, (assuming you have a psd with alpha channel such as Poser will automatically supply or some similar type of image), select the Channels tab and scroll down.

Do you need to invert the alpha channel? I have some old programs that do not work in layers and I was able to convert most of my files (95%) without doing anything but resizing them. The other 5% I reduced the colors which sometimes worked. Either way I was able to converted all my picts.

so there is no alpha channel if you are making say a texture from scratch? PS6 doesn't make it automatically, or it's not till you reopen it as a psd that you find it? Sorry, I was working on something one day with a tutorial and it wanted me to do something with the Alpha channel and I couldn't find it. Ony color channnels.

I don't know if this is relevant but you have to save a Poser render in a format like TIF which supports alpha channels - JPEG doesn't.

Yes, had the same problem myself at first. Just make sure to save your final thumbnail as a PNG file and size it to 91x91 pixels. Even one pixel off and rsr convert won't work.
