This is one of those "Is it just me?" messages.
When I import a 3ds mesh into Vue4 (I'm using 4.05-02, and it's been this way in all versions of 4 I've used), the viewports show only a small sub-set of the polygons of the object. Sometimes an extremely small sub-set, say, 2 polygons for an object consisting of thousands. The objects render just fine, though, it's just a viewport display problem. It's not a "normals" problem, turning 2-sided on doesn't change anything.
Is this something that I (we?) just have to live with? It makes positioning objects very difficult.

What kind of video card do you have? Have you tried it with OpenGL turned off?

My card is a Diamond Viper V770 TNT Ultra, with fairly recent drivers. The old drivers had the same problem. Yeah, I've tried turning OpenGL off and it is different, but not necessarily better. Instead of seeing a few triangles I see a few lines (poly edges).

OK... Windows? Or Mac Os X? Might just try turning the redraw down some, but something doesn't sound right. I hate to simply tell people "Contact e-on support", but I might just have to suggest that, since it sounds like an issue between Vue and your video card :( (unless you're on a Mac OS X machine.)

Windows 98se Pentium III 650 Diamond Viper V770 TNT Ultra The weird thing is most Vue mesh displays fine. Only imported mesh and Vue rocks display screwy. I tried playing with the "instant draw quality" setting, and when I set it to "better" the object DOES appear normal for a second or two, but then the viewports redraw and the goodness goes away. And the redraw is so slllloooowww.

I have the same problem. I just figured that was the way it was supposed to be (makes fine tuning a real pain, though) Mine is win98, AMD 750 and ATI Radeon Radeon is "Supposed" to have pretty good support for open-GL, but they have been known to offer lousy drivers for their cards. I have no other problems with programs that use open-gl, including my using linux and mesa (a level that runs on top of Open-GL), so it is either the drivers (for which ATI paid money to develop) or vue. The HW capability is there as can be seen by linux and directX (not together of course) eric

I should have looked at your posting prior to my own. I am suffering from the exact same problem. I have tried everything I can think of to solve this one. It happens not only with my lightwave objects but is also present on any other program I have used and saved out to a 3ds object. It may be time to contact e-on.

I had the very same problems, in fact, it was happening to me when I would just move an object. I reported to Eon and Steve Bell got back to me. He finally suggested to max. out the "background draw" and "instant draw" sliders to "Better" side, in the Options dialog box. Since then, I have not had any occurances of the problem. Cheers, JoeK

Thanks Joe! (and everyone!), "background draw" did the trick. If I move "instant draw" up even a little the update is too slow on my machine. At least with "background draw" turned all the way up the mesh eventually (about 8 seconds for all viewports) looks right. I didn't even know what "background draw" was. I didn't get to page 236 when I tried to read the manual.
