Tonight, just for old times sake, I was going through the first 10 or so pages in the Poser gallery. I was amazed to see that three of my own images appeared on the same page, even though they were almost a month apart. This caused me to wonder what's happened to the galleries? have they become homogenized? Are there so many people posting that a good image will dissapear into the nether world of pages the majority of viewers can't be bothered flipping over to? And then of course I started thinking -- almost never a good thing -- about the possibility of a juried gallery. Submissions are made by artists of any media, and voted on by a core group of artists and admins for inclusion. This would keep out most of the crap (and you all know what crap there is, let's not kid ourselves), as well as promote top-notch stuff and allow viewers the chance to see what the community thinks is the best. Right now the ranking system is flawed almost beyond repair, so though this may have been its original intention it has failed miserably. This "Hot 20" thing is a joke. Now, I'm not suggesting I should be on the jury, or even that my work is worthwhile enough to be included, but let's at least discuss the possibility. I'm tired of paging through reams of crud for the one or two really impressive works.

Interesting..... If a member removed an old picture from their gallery it would make the 'history' in that gallery different and I'm sure there are many who delete old images.....is this the case...I haven't been posting long enough to remove any yet ;) ;)

Well the Hot20 is voted in, not by rankings or page clicks, but people physically have to click the "Vote for this image" button. I agree that the rankings system is useless, and the comments tab is rarely used for what it's meant for (when it is, the artist usually gets offended that someone thinks their work isn't perfect, and proceeeds to tell them to fuck off). As for a Juried Gallery, you know yourself how many new images pass through each day in the galleries. Would you personally be willing at the end of each day or each week, to go through each and every single image just to pick your 10 favourites? Me thinks any normal person would have a brain fart just at the thought of all that useless work. The voting system, is fine, because if you don't want to vote for an image, you don't, and if you don't care about the voting system, you don't vote. As for the Hot 20 being a joke, maybe so in the Poser gallery becase there are somethinng like 30 submissions every 20 minutes, but most of the other galleries have a much slower flow so we can all have a nice look through. As for the Hot 20, I get bored personally of seeing the same images for so long, so I usually just click the What's New link in the 2D or Photo galleries, and get nice refreshing images every day.

Good point about the Hot 20 in other galleries. As for the jury, there could be some sort of criteria for initial submissions. After that, one or two people can quickly skim the cream off the top by flipping through with their fingers on the "delete" key, giving each image a minor few seconds of consideration before shipping the rest off to the jury. It would be difficult to implement, that's for sure.

maybe once a year, but ick, I'd hope they wouldn't put that job on my shoulders
