If there's any good 3d poser modellers out there who want to do some more cars, feel free. I'd buy 'em. Maybe some of the 70's muscle cars. I've been wanting to do "Road Warrior" genre stuff for some time, but can't find the basic vehicles to do it with, an don't have enough 3D modelling knowledge or programs to do it with. Anybody know where I can get some free or for purchase?

Robert Sharkey has a couple of freebie cars (a '57 Chevy and '72 Stingray) at his website, SHARKEY's Gate. He also has a nice sportscar in the Marketplace.
hdrider has a couple of '65 Corvettes (a convertible and a hardtop) in the Poser Free Stuff at 3D Commune.

Don't Forget the 57 Chevy now in FreeStuff.

No slight intended, Duddly. I assumed that kalebdaark already knew about your Chevy. :) He's right, though. We have several thousand clothing items for Victoria, and only a handful of poseable cars. Not much variety, yet.

No Worries, I didn't take it as a slight, I just didn't know if he knew. Don't forget Poser will accept .3ds models as well and there are several that work nicely out of the box. There's a great free .3ds Bugatti at: http://berg.heim.at/kaprun/430112/ Doesn't take much to get it working well. May have to assign a few colors to Materials and set some Transparencies but it looks great after very little work. There is a great free Jeep at: http://www.xdyne.com/cgi-bin/2.0/sportcar.cgi Looks great after assigning transparencies to the glass and reflection maps to the chrome. If you willing to do a little more work there are lots of sites that carry free cars in .3ds, .max, .dxf, etc. formats. Quality generally ranges from really bad to pretty darn good. The body of the 57' Chevy started life as a free .3ds file from 3DCafe.com. It took alot of work to get that one working but there are many others that take alot less work to get pretty decent results.

The Meshfactory (http://www.meshfactory.com/) has many excellent cars, tanks, airplanes, buildings, household items and the like in a variety of formats. 3ds and the textures they supply work well with Poser and the quality is very high. A few are broken, but most work.Individual models are quite expensive, but you have buy a subscription for $159 a year that allows you to have unlimited access to all of the models. I consider it one of the best values out there.

There are several other nice cars too. Looking through my bookmarks (all tested) are: http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/meshes/meshvehicles.htm http://www.3droom.net/object3d.html http://www.turbosquid.com/ (mostly pay, but some free) http://www.ultim8-3d.com/html/freemodels.html and http://www.deespona.com/index.html (Mostly pay but there is a Nice free Mercedes S600 and a Panzer Tank.)

The stuff at 3dxtra truly rocks. This guy puts so much attention into his work, it's amazing.

Check Duddly's reply @ #4 above. I looked for a link for a yellow jeep when you posted a picture of your ride--but couldn't find it. This isn't the same one; but, hey! OT: My current rant is cars with wheels that bounce, as well as spin and steer. Not because I need it for animation; i just want to slam 'em.

Ah - found the Jeep... it's basically a Jeep Wrangler TJ that has been modified enough to escape Daimler Chrysler's ire... see this line: "We have created a special sample vehicle, "Jeep Xdyner" drawn completely from our imagination by taking different parts from our collection." Kinda sneaky, huh? :) Oh, as for suspension bounce, all you'd have to do is to add IK chains to the wheels... they would then react just like real-life tires would, even in animation. (ever notice how human figure feet droop w/ IK on when you pick the figure up off the ground? Same deal could apply to tires and even the suspension, no?) /PVirtualSite posted Sun, 31 March 2002 at 12:23 PM
And it's a pretty amazing model, Pen. Thanks for the link.
Duddly posted Sun, 31 March 2002 at 2:22 PM
As far as suspension hop goes, yes, it probably could be done with ik chains. I really didn't take into account anyone wanting to use it for animations, so I didn't even seperate the rear wheels, which you wouldn't need to move for stills. I tried to keep it as easy to use as possible. If you go clicking around on it you won't accidentally select and move any parts you normally wouldn't want to for renders. I will keep it in mind for future cars however.
