The entry restriction says: "Dimensions - Entries cannot be any larger than either 800 (horizontal) x 600 (vertical) pixels, or 600 (vertical) x 800 (horizontal). Anything equal to or less than these dimensions is fine. No, 800 x 800 is not acceptable." "equal to or less than these dimensions is fine" means that I can upload an image with 1000x480 size? In this case the area is equal of 800x600. I think that this rule is good ('cause I have a 56k modem) and control the total amount of Kb's is a good idea... but... is not better if we set a maximum level of Kb's, without caring about image size and compression? Don't misunderstand me I don't want to start any discussion on this forum, if the rules are fixed I will follow them, mine was only an idea, or simply a silly question. :)

I don't know about the rules, but if you upload an image 1000 px wide, a lot of people are going to be side scrolling to see it all, and that's annoying.

Yes but also an image 600x800 needs to be scrolled

I don't know for sure, but I don't think it's a problem. Aks AgentSmith if you want to be sure.

Actually, what I meant was linear pixel dimensions, not a total in area. The reason to give specific deminsions restrictions was also to give an equality to the whole of all the pictures. Meaning - Some members only upload say, a 640x480 picture, then someone else uploads a 1024x768 and gets more notice than the first, smaller one. Unfair? Perhaps. This was an issue at another site that does nothing but monthly contests, and they have had to instate dimension rules to make it more fair to everyone. `Course they give away expensive prizes...every entry there is looking for an edge. Also, the reason I did not give just a maximum level of Kb's is because of the fact that .jpg compression varies from picture to picture depending on what and how many colors used. What might look good for one picture at a certain Kb vs. another at the same Kb will look too compressed. Or, the other side of it; a 640x640 (or smaller) pic doesn't need to be saved at 100% but if I gave a Max. Kb of 300Kb, members would save that 640x640 at 98% to equal 300Kb, when it really could be saved at 90%, look no different, and be only 150Kb, thus making voting easier for everyone. Also, a small factor is that a huge majority of people have their monitor set to 800x600, so an entry uploded at that max. size would fill up their screen anyway. The only way to have entries and not have people scroll back and forth is to have a max width of only 640 pixels, and that sucks, I had to do that for a "win bryce 5" contest held here. Just not big enough to show good detail, in my opinion. (not that a bigger render would have helped me win...lol) I hope that explains why I made the rules the way they are now. Just trying to level the playing field and cut down on total Kb. Thanks AgentSmith

Well it all sounds very fair to me Agentsmith. Would love to know which this contest site is? ;-) Also I save most of my images at about 50%-65% JPG without much distortion and affecting the picture quality (all my posts in fact!) and with various colors and with a lot of variation as well. So anything saved in terms of Kbs when posting an image definitely helps..specially us poor dial up folks! And if the challenge continues to grow...I shudder to think how I'd vote with my modem connection trying to compete with Bryce's rendering for speed! :-P

Thank you for your explanation AgentSmith. It was very clear and complete, I will follow the rule, as always. ... I know it was a silly question :).... bye

Humorix, what app are you using to compress your images at that level? Vasquez, didn't seem like a silly question to me! AgentSmith's response answered questions I didn't even know I had - LOL!
