Subject: My first use of a SLR and slide film

Any Comments to inprove welcome Any slide scanner tips as pictures seem darker than the slide. Last week I brought a second hand EOS 5 body and a new 28-105mm lens. This is the first roll of film I took. On most of the other slides I had made a lot of mistakes but Im learning.

Nice shot. The only thing it misses are catchlights in the eyes. When you don't have them, the eyes look sort of dead or vacant. You may not have been able to get them here, as it is a matter of the angle of the light to the animals face, and you weren't in control of the bird. Also, a less busy background would have been a minor improvement. Same argument 'tho. Can't help you with the slide scanner, as I have rarely used one.

Its a shame about the background but I only had a couple of minutes while he was outside my house. Catchlights I will remember that, the trouble was anything that moved the owl looked at it and the owl was attracting a lot of attention. Thanks

Azy your first shot with a SLR and slide film is very good, SLR cameras take a lot of getting use to and slide film is not very tolerant on exposure. I have posted some scanner stuff for Jordy on his I hate scanners thread , that you might find useful. :O)

Well, I think the background is actually working well in some ways; specifically it is light where the owl is in shadow, so it helps the owl to pop out. Also you did a good job of getting the background out of focus. So that problem is really minor (nitpicky, y'know?) Sue

What scanner are you using to scan your slides? I just recently used transparency film for the first time and most of the images look good, but when I scan them....yuck! Yours looks really good....are you using a film scanner or a flatbed with a transparency adapter?

I'm using a 1800dpi slide and color/b&w negs scanner its only a cheap one Try reducing the magnification by 25% then 50% then 75% I found a 75% reduction resulted in a 7200dpi slide, this is what I used for the above image. This seemed to inprove the image. Hope this helps
