Color me a non-conformist... a man who get's used to something and decides to stick with it forever and fights to keep things nice and comfort and familiar... er...my ex-wife being the exception... okay...at least computer program related. It really has to knock me off my feet before I "update". Here is my problem... My system crashed on me big time this weekend and to fix the problem I had to reformat everything (thank god for my CD-RW!!), I also had to wait for CompaQ to send me a new restore disk because the graphic card I installed was locking up my system after conflicting with CompaQ software... Needless to say, CompaQ only uses WIN98 now and hence I am stuck with this compounded piece of crap of an OS...GRRR... but I have everything up, decided to open poser and ACKKKKKKKK!!! IT'S DIFFERENT NOW!!! Now when I click on the Poser Library it lists every sub-catagory in a long list with arrows (no scroll bar, just STUPID ARROWS)! No more view all at once then click the catagory, then scroll down to get to what I want...god forbid it isn't in there or open it up and scroll down again. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE SIDE BY SIDE VIEW OF THE LIBRARY CATAGORIES IN POSER USING WIN98? Or am I stuck scrolling eternally down to find the right folder of poses, characters, body parts forever? Please help!! Jack ::stressing big time::

Umm... If you get Windows98 to work properly and reliably, can I put up a monument in your name?

Get used to scrolling....Every since I have had win98 that's the way it works. Ed

Sorry Jack, but with WinDoze98, you've got to scroll :( Paul

I only had WIN98 installed for five minutes, but I thought the interface was user configurable. I think the animated menus can be turned off, dunno if that will help or not.

Anybody got a screen shot of what it looks like in Win95 as opposed to 98? For me the program works great in 98. Of course I've never had it on 95 so I don't know what's different and the description here is not quite putting a clear picture in my head. I also run Poser on a Mac from time to time and it gives me all sorts of trouble there. For some reason my Mac copy cannot use bump maps... Which means it's only good for posing and test rendering. I have to use CD-RW's to get the stuff back over to the PC for any final renders. Unfortunately I spend more hours of the day with access to the Mac... :)

I've heard Win2000 has some obscene system requirements. Something like minimum 166Mhz/64mb ram and 300Mhz and 128mb ram to get anywhere. This is from a Computer Currents review of the beta a few months ago: http://www.currents.net/magazine/national/1713/inet21713.html Most of us have those kinds of systems. But keep in mind that to get good performance out of your heavier apps like Poser, Carrara, MS Office, assorted 3D games, and so on... you're going to need to be enough above that to still run well... The way I see it; while my 500mhz/256 ram is great at running Poser and Carrara on Win98 it'll lose a good half of that on win2000 meaning I'd need a 750Mhz/384 ram to match what I have now.

Jack, I reformatted and installed Win98 this past weekend (by choice) and my Poser looks the same as it did before. I'm not quite sure, though, what you are referring to. For instance, in my figures library, I have a long list of subdirectories and they all show and I don't have to scroll. Maybe I don't have as many as you, but I have a bunch. Then--when I open a sub, I do have to scroll down through the .rsrs. I had to do that too in 95. So far I don't see any difference--except everything is faster (mostly because I 'cleaned' stuff up and also was very particular about what I reloaded). Diane B

I too have been scrolling a long time in win98. I know what you refer to, hated it when it changed. Not sure why it does that. Win 2000 is available Feb 17.

Don't really understand the problem per se..but I've never had ONE problem with Windows 98...I'd hesitate to change a thing. My understanding of Windows 2000 is that it is the new "NT" and you'll need all new drivers for everything and it's going to be hella expensive and is meant to be a server os and not really a desktop o/s. Furthermore, Win2000 from my understanding, is going to require all sorts of upgraded software, because nothing has been written for it's platform. Sounds like a miss for me. -Darth_LOgice

Whats up?? WIN98 is sweet. Never crashes on my systems. 95 is a dog. I have 4 systems that run 7x24 with WIN98SE. I could go on but 98 is the way to go at this time. I'll shut up now and sit back down.. ;) Clint

I might consider Win2000 after they kill a few of the 65000+ bugs Microsoft has confirmed exists in it. Yes, 65000+ CONFIRMED bugs. Sorry, Microsoft does not call them "bugs". They are "issues." I might consider 2000 after they fix the network security holes Microsoft has confirmed exists. And I might consider 2000 if they can ever prove they ever got Win3.x, Win95 or Win98 stable. This is one reason I try not to blame the developers of software for the Win OS. They follow the rules and "lay of the land" as given to them by Microsoft. Now, if those rules and "lay of the land" are unstable, nothing they do will guarantee that their project is going to be stable. If you want to go insane, try programming with Microsoft's Visual Studio. It is why I am the way I am. Tragic, truly tragic.

Darth, you are mislead. I have been working on the project for over a year, and have tested COUNTLESS apps on Windows 2000, and the only issues I have seen, have been certain games that were hard coded to look for Windows 9X, won't run in Win2k, because it is an NT environment. Windows 2000 will be the exact same price as NT 4 was ($179), supports something like 10,000 devices with drivers in the box. If you bought your computer in the last 2-3 years, it will most likely have a driver for all your peripherals. If not, then most OEM hardware manufacturers will have new Win2k hardware drivers written within the next 6 months to stay competitive. It is simply the best product Microsoft has ever produced. If any of you are considering a move to Win2k, you can download a utility that I helped prepare that will analyze your system, and generate a report based on the hardware and software on your machine. It will tell you whether or not there are any known incompatibilities. Simply rocks. I would say on average about 90% of apps that run on NT4, will have no issues in win2k. And about 75%-85% of apps that run in Win9x. Check it out, here is the URL: Windows 2000 Readiness System Analyzer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgrade/compat/ready.asp co(V)(V)union

Well according to that little test, Win2000 wont work on my system because of allot of my MAIN stuff wont be supported (video card, DVD, Printer list goes on ). So in other words, a new system running bare boned is incompatible, which is just to F*CKED up to think about!! And people wonder why I still whine about not being in a DOS universe.... Hey Jack, I have WIN98 on no less than 4 machines! Have had Poser 4 on all of them at various times. Never noticed any of the changes you mention when I upgraded from 95. In Poser anyway. I have had other problems off and on, though, too numerous to mention, with various other programs, most noticeably a Wacom Intuous tablet that needs its dat file rebuilt about once a month, without fail. Strange, perplexing, and still sometimes pleasing creature is WIN98 (not a first wife, though I had one of those too). Despite all this, I can only advise you to perservere. Or change OS.

If I ever had to go back to Win 4.x, I'd have to shoot myself.

picnic posted Wed, 16 February 2000 at 4:07 PM

Larry, while we're all diverging a bit on this thread, please say a bit more about the Intuos tablet. I have a year old Intuos 6 x 8. I dled the updated driver from their site not long ago and it fixed the problems I had in Painter Classic. I dled it again and added it this weekend when I reformatted/installed Win98. Now--I'm not sure what you are saying? What else will I have to do month to month G? Diane B

picnic posted Wed, 16 February 2000 at 4:08 PM

Hey Jack--why don't you do a screen capture and show us what you are talking about. I'm curious. Diane B

Larry F posted Wed, 16 February 2000 at 4:22 PM

Diane, I have the 12x9 (or 9x12 if you prefer) and have had it about a year. I have to say I absolutely love the damn thing! As a hangover from Deluxe Paint days on the Amiga, I love to draw in the computer and I used a mouse for years, but about four years ago started having shoulder pains. Ergo the tablet. The ONLY PROBLEM I have ever had with it is about once a month (really) the tablet freezes up. At first this was very frustrating to say the least. After calling their tech support, which I found to be pretty helpful, I learned that the problem wsa the wacom.dat file. I simply have to go do the DOS prompt, delete that file, and reboot. This takes about a minute, so I've just learned to live with it. In all other respects the darn thing is a true blessing and works in every program I have, i.e., Imagine for Windows, Bryce, Poser 4, Word, WordPerfect, Excel, Animator Studio Pro (oldie but kinda goodie), Gloodle, Organica, Paint Shop Pro 5/6, Streamline, and the newest VUE3. I know several other people with these tablets in varying sizes and none of them has this problem, though I have heard others have different issues. In short, that is the sole "difficulty" I have with the tablet and I do know what I would do without it - MISS it like hell! Hope that helps. Larry F

Darth_Logice posted Wed, 16 February 2000 at 8:16 PM

I think that computer science is going to change a lot between now and 2002..so much so that new motherboard technology and the increase of dual processor usage will require a whole new operating system. Therefore, it may be wise to stick with 98 until 2002 like Del Says. -darth

w2000 has "over 200 serious documented problems" and over a thousand more "non-serious" problems. Or so I hear. yet it's still the most stable one out yet. What does that say about how much we'll put up with? sigh the course of using commercial products 'eh? I've never used poser on 95, I just assumed scrolling was the way it worked SewerRat

hi Jack, a screenshot would be helpful.... I'm a win98 user and have no problems with Poser4 (un-patched, yet). it has never crashed, yet, though i sometimes have Poser, Bryce and Photoshop open at the same time! i reinstalled windows98 yesterday and there were no problems at all... maybe you can give more details, Jack? duesentrieb posted Thu, 17 February 2000 at 5:41 AM

Jack, I know about this "misfeature" in Win98 concerning the scrolling menues. There's no way around it. But compared to Win95, Win98 has a lot of nice features that 95 should've had. A better name for it would be "Win95 Advanced". I recommend to stay with Win98 (I use it myself) unless there may be a service pack 3(!) of Win2000. I read about 63000 bugs in Win2000, 28000 of them serious.

picnic posted Thu, 17 February 2000 at 6:56 AM

I'm still not sure what several of you mean by 'scrolling menus'. There are obviously some of us that don't see any difference between 95 and 98 and wonder exactly what you are referring to. So far I like Win98. It seems more stable for me thus far (other than I'm having problems with my Umax scanner 600P--anyone??. I had this problem before and loaded a patch--takes care of error VMM32 missing or corrupted unable to load Windows, have loaded it once and still have a problem. Hope the load a minute ago will fix it. However, this isn't a Win98 problem--its a Umax problem). Diane B

Autoloader posted Thu, 17 February 2000 at 9:34 AM

Jack, I understand what you mean, but I got that problem in a little different way. I am running Win98 and when I first installed Poser 3 I had the menus that scrolled out to the side also, but when the Poser 3 patch came out (many many months ago) and I installed it then I started getting the scrolling menus. And like you, I HATE it. I have a ton of directories in the pose section and it takes forever to find what you want. Since all I did was install the patch and not change my OS then I considered it a patch problem (and regreted installing it), but since you only changed your OS then I'd now say that it's a problem between the program and the OS, neither is really to blame. As far as your question goes, I too have tried to figure out a way to get back to the side by side version but have had no luck and no one I have talked to can figure out a way either. So I guess we are both just stuck with this undesirable option. But if you find something out please let me know and I will do the same. Autoloader

Jack D. Kammerer posted Thu, 17 February 2000 at 5:37 PM

Thanks everyone and I will let you know, Autoloader. I have a programmer looking at finding a way for me to do it and as soon as I know you will :o) "If it first don't work, rewrite the damn thing" Jack

Yo Jack! Hope this helps: 1. Start "Registry Editor" (Regedit) and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionexplorerAdvanced 2. From the "Edit" Menu, choose "New", then "String Value". 3. Type in: StartMenuScrollPrograms 4. Double-click the new value and type FALSE as the data. This would enable Windows 98 to expand its cascading menus as multiple columns where necessary (just as in Windows 95). However the above only works if you have Internet Explorer 5 installed. :-D
