Chris, The model itself will work on its own without translation. My pic example is a metaball model thrown together. Now in order for bone influences to take effect you must convert the model to a vertex model. This will allow you to adjust the influences. Though I dare say that you could do just fine without them... You will need to create a few more bones though. The Spooky example from the manual is a good example of how you need to have a few more bones for the curvature of the "legs" to work.
