The Church Stretton area being readily accessible from the great centres of population in the English Midlands and North-West attracted many enthusiastic students who were well rewarded by the complex geology of the area.

The three major subdivisions of the Lower Paleozoic period (570-405 million years ago) are named for the tribes that inhabited the area at the time of the Roman Conquest, these are the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian periods.
