Ummm.... so far Carrara has been nothing but a disappointment for me. Does anyone have the same problem I am having? I am simply selecting two objects and doing a subtraction boolean operation to create an arched window in a wall, and every time I try the assembly window goes blank and the message "rendering failed" appears. What the heck? Carrara is supposed to be so powerful and can't even handle a simple boolean operation? Can some one help me out here? Just a little frustrated, headgamer

I did my first booleans a few days ago in Carrara. I took a rectangle and subtracted about 4 times from it. Worked fine. Your on a PC arent ya Headgamer? If so what OS and version and what type of processor and how much memory.. ;) Thanks, Clint

PC...Win98 SE... Athlon 600... 128 mb RAM... I don't get it... I got a couple of booleans to work fine when I first got it, but then two days later I cannot.... I am about to uninstall and reinstall if this can't get resolved somehow... Headgamer

Yeah, I did. Simply copied and pasted my stained glass model (which was part of another scene) into a brand new scene. Added a cube for a wall and reshaped it to make a wall, placed them together, selected both, selected boolean operations, and selected "Cube minus stained glass". All I get are the "rendering failed" messages, and it looks like when I can see something it combines them rather than subtracts the stained glass from the wall... Weird... but I can do simple booleans like combining a cube and sphere and doing the intersection/subtraction stuff... though I still get errors then too. Carrara is making me a little angry here.... 8^) Headgamer

Yes, it is like the wind, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn`t or everthing disappears. Dave

Should I just uninstall and do a clean reinstall to see if that helps? Just curious... I wanted to finish a scene I began in RDS, but it's beginning to look like I will HAVE to finish it in RDS (and I hate the RDS renderer....)... bummer. HG....

I have already unistalled Carrara and made sure it was all gone and reinstalled it. It didn`t me any good. Also want to see something wierd, create text and duplicate with symmetry in the z axis and rotate it see the wierd things it does. Metacreations agreed with me on some things that are bugged up with this program. Dave

I have had many problems with boolean operations also. One of the tell-tale sign a boolean will fail is if an object enters a surface and exits a surface which borders a hole. I will usually try slight positioning adjustments (5 times before I give up). I also will change surface normals and surface positions. Usually after too much trying it succeeds and I get a carpel tunnel flare up. The rendering fails seem to be the result of a geometric anomally that the computer generates when calculating the surface intersection. Not much help but you are not alone.
